The Special Convocation (30th May, 2009)
 

30th May 2009 was a “special” day; it was the occasion of the Special Convocation of UPES. Special, because of the presence of many national and international luminaries to grace the occasion.

The presence of H. E. Dr. Mohammad bin Hamad Al-Rumhy, Minister of Oil & Gas, Sultanate of Oman was testament to the fact that UPES is recognised and accepted as a unique and respected institution in the area of Energy education. Congratulating the graduating students H.E. Dr Rumby said, “the challenges facing the industry will be faced by those of you who join the industry now. The task of supplying energy will depend on you. The industry needs you and you have taken the positive step by joining it.”

Welcoming the students to the industry while addressing the occasion Mr. R. S. Pandey said, “ the Energy needs of India are growing at a higher rate than the world average.”

The highlights of the ceremony were the award of four Doctorates to working professionals from the industry and one Honoris Causa (Honorary Doctorate) in Petroleum Management to the renowned Oil & Gas professional Mr. P. M. S. Prasad, President (Oil & Gas Business), Reliance Industries Ltd. for his “outstanding contribution to the growth of the Indian Hydrocarbon industry, and to the overall growth of the country”.

Four Doctorates were awarded to working professionals and faculty of UPES. The awardees were:

  • Mr. Ashutosh Karnatak (Asian Gas Grid: A Critical Analysis of its Feasibility)
  • Mr. K. Murlidhar (ERM application in the Oil industry: A study towards better implementation in the Middle East Oil industry)
  • Ms. Meenu Mishra (The Impact of Privatization of Electricity Distribution on Quality of Service: A Case Analysis of Delhi during 2000-2007)
  • Ms. Mousumi Dasgupta (Application of Geophysical Methods {Well-logs & Seismic} in Coal Bed Methane Prospect Evaluation).

Another laudatory event was the conferment of “Honorary Life Fellowship” of the Energy Institute, UK on Mr. M. S. Ramachandran, former Chairman of IOCL, for his contribution and association with the Indian and International Energy sector.

The occasion also saw a painting titles “Ocean to Sun” by Dr. Rakesh Shanker, Dean, CoMES, being unveiled by H.E. Dr. Rumhy and Mr. R. S. Pandey.
