The 5th Annual Techno Legal Management Fest witnessed over 120 events organized by three colleges of the University with attracting participation crossing over 4500 across the nation. This year’s theme was inspired by the campaign “Make in India” that our beloved Prime Minister Honorable Sh. Narendra Modi enthusiastically started. As a result most of the events were mapped towards this theme, to ignite young minds to make in India. With more than 100 events distributed among the three constituent colleges i.e. College of Engineering Studies, College of Legal Studies and College of Management & Economics Studies, IGNITE 2016 showcased the hidden talent of young minds and brought out ingenious students. The best of the brains from all domains who came together on a common platform and exhibited unmatched talent.
Of the 121 events organised throughout the course of the event, 76 were from the engineering college, 15 from the legal department and 30 from the management college. Some of the most renounced colleges of this year were Symbiosis Law School Pune, Delhi University, School of Law, Sastra University, Amity Law School both Delhi and Lucknow, Government Law College Of Law- Panjim, NLIU- Bhopal, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun Institute of Technology- Dehradun, Graphic Era, College of Engineering-Roorkee, NLU-Odisha, School of Law, Christ University-Banglore, National Law School of India University-Banglore, Jindal Global Law School-Delhi, Faculty of Law-Luckhnow University, Law School,Banaras Hindu University-Varanasi,NLIU-Bhopal, Institute of Law, Nirma University-Ahemdabad, University School of Law and Legal Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha-Delhi, Government Law University.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest Shri R.S. Meena, Additional Director General of Police (Administration), Uttrakhand, who spoke about the importance of hard work, the sanctity of the ‘Make in India’ initiative by the government of India in 2014. He spoke about China being a big economy from where India exports goods.
The crowd puller events of College of Engineering were Robowar-where the BOT(ROBOTS) were operated manually and they had to face off others BOTS in arena. Among other notable events which drew attraction of students were Survival of Fittest, Hackathon, Robo War, RC Avioyo, Robo Soccer, Water Warriors, Robo Pin Ball, automobile design skills and many more to name a few. The events of College of Legal Studies were no less. They drove interest and participation nationwide. Events such as Techno-Legal-moot was 1st ever of its kind happening where teams from all over nation attempted to solve the disputes that happens when technology coincides with legality. One of the event Paper Presentation provided the opportunity to students and researchers alike, to present and enlighten the world with design, abstraction and ideas. Youth Parliament another event in row gave a high crowd response which involved simulation of legislative proceedings where young minds met to discuss the nuances of law-making and beyond. When the two colleges were on the same par how could College of Management stay less. It came up with out of the box events such as Kaun Banega Supply Chain Manager-where a quiz and presentation in light of supply chain scenario for Make in India took place, then Brand Maniacs- event focused on the managerial aspects of the student. Bizarre logo and business quiz was an event where event was purely based upon how well you see advertisement and possess knowledge of the companies.
Apart from these competitive events, on a cultural night was also organized which relieved everyone from the day hard work and brought out some amazing talented dancers and singers of UPES. The team Xeleration who is the official dance group of UPES and Vultus another dance group of UPES performed and left the atmosphere with sound of claps and air full of energy. The faculties were also part of this colourful evening.

2nd National Trial Advocacy The 2nd National Trial Advocacy is being organized as apart of the IGNITE, 2015 by College of Legal Studies. The event saw participation from approximately 12 national teams. The second day started with the preliminary rounds in 6 courtrooms. The Teams faced off each other- grilling witnesses, putting forth legal arguments and so on. After two intense sessions the team were headed off for the high tea wherein the results were declared.
GEMS “INVESTORS’ DILEMMA” : UPES GEMS Team organized an event christened as ‘Investors Dilemma.’ The event was based on the stock market. There were 3 rounds in the event. The first round contained a set of various Multiple Choice Questions which tested the student’s ability in the field of investing. In the second round the students which were filtered went through an interesting round of the Quiz. The third round was the final round in which screened out students performed the Virtual Trading to become the winner of the event.
The 4th edition of UPES International Model United Nations 2015 has achieved a new benchmark. The Chief Guest of the Conference was Brig. Dr. Arun Sahgal –Director, Forum for Strategic Initiatives (a policy related think tank focusing on policy initiatives in National Security, Diplomacy and Track II Dialogues). The event was scheduled on 7th & 8th Feb. 2015. The event has seen participation of 250 delegates from 36 institutions across the country and 37 Delegates from 7 Countries viz; Angola, Bhutan, Chad, Gabon, Kenya, Indonesia and South Sudan. UPES IGNITE is a blend of technical, legal and management events which is organized for students of all streams on UPES Campus. This is considered to be one among the much awaited techno-managerial-law fest held on campus. This is entirely student driven co-curricular event that provides multi-facet platforms for students to present and explore their talent across various levels and segments. The event provides extensive exposure to students besides learning to organize and conduct event. Enthusiasm engulfs entire campus during the celebration and all enjoy agile participation.
This year, the inauguration ceremony of Ignite '14 was conducted on 20th of February, 2014 at the campus. The Chief Guest, Dr. Jayesh Bellari, from IIT Mumbai, delivered an extremely enlightening presentation on the Topic “Use of Nano-Technology in Medical Sciences”. After the memory-boosting lecture, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr. Utpal Ghosh encouraged and discussed the essence of participation and bonding of students in such fests.
170 students participated in 30 events. These events were of varied nature from being a typical technical event to various sports co-curricular events. The other energizing events such as Run-for-Fun, Race-o-Mania, Feel the Field, Mechelweights, etc helped participants boost their physical strengths. Events such as Brainrash and Quinnite however, checked the knowledge of the participants in diverse fields.
There were events from law department pertaining to legal writing like Legal Essay Writing, Panel Discussion, DPIS, debates .
On day two of Ignite enthusiasm increased by exposing students to as many as 28 events which included Scholar of The Year, Chess, Best CEO, Tech Run, Robowar, Dalal Street, et al. Law events like National Parliamentary Debate and Client Counseling saw around 50 participants from colleges across nation. Robowars, sub-events of IEEE and many others faced tough competition.
The UPES SPE Fest is one of the biggest fests organized by SPE Students Chapter in India and across the world. Recently held on 6th -9th Feb, this four day fest provided a plethora of technical events from primary fields of petroleum technology on Campus. This four day techno-carnival saw participation from 240 national and 14 international participants. The journey began with inaugural ceremony performed by Mr Rich Pace, Director Operations Cairn India Ltd. along with other distinguished guests like Mr Javed Ahmed, Head SPE North India Section and GM (Drilling)- IDT, ONGC. Besides others dignitaries, this fest witnessed presence of eminent guests from Cairn India, Schlumberger, Bake Hughes and various other institutions. This includes Mr Jayant Malhotra, Global Account Manager, Schlumberger, Mr Chander Shekhar and Mr Pankaj Kumar, Office of Director, Offshore, ONGC and Capt. Arun Kumar, Indian Military Academy and Mr H P Bhalla, Director- Special Projects, Cairn India Ltd., Mr Sudakr Mishra, Senior Reservoir Engineer, Cairn India Ltd. The Chief Guests comments and their experience at the inauguration of the fest
The National Law Day of India, the day when the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, was celebrated in the College of Legal Studies (COLS), University of Petroleum and Energy Stuides (UPES) with the fervor as in previous years. Padmashree, Mr. Chaman Lal IPS, Former Director General of Police and Human Rights Activist was the Chief Guest of the day. The celebrations started with an address by Advocate Sadhna Ramachandran on “Contemporary Issues in Law” followed by an address by Mr. Chaman Lal On “Human Rights in Conflict Situations”.
A debating competition for the students of COLS on the topic, “Information Technology: Boon or Bane” was held in the afternoon. The competition was judged by the Chief Guest Mr. Chaman Lal, Adv. Sadhna Ramachandran, Prof. (Dr.) Tabrez Ahmed, Associate Director, COLS, and faculty members of COLS.
The day also witnessed the launch of the UPES Law Review, the flagship law journal of UPES. The events of the day were graced by the presence of Dr. S.J. Chopra, Chancellor, UPES, Dr. Parag Diwan, Vice Chancellor, and Prof. Utpal Ghosh, Pro Vice Chancellor, UPES.
The Law Day celebrations ended with the prize distribution for the winners of the debating competitions!
“Kalakriti”- Your strokes, their smiles, was the event organized on Campus. The event was organized by UPES GOOGLE HUB. It focused on a creative way of spreading awareness about Google and its products with the fun of chart painting competition. This event was a huge success with a massive participation of 75 teams from the various courses of College of engineering Studies, College of management Studies and College of Legal Studies.
The Astra”, a team consisting of six students pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from UPES. The team is the first from India to take part in the Experimental Sounding Rocket Competition, an international collegiate event organised by Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA)in partnership with top aerospace companies like Lockheed Martin, NASA, ESA dated 20-23 June, 2013.
A team of four UPES students from B.Tech, 3rd year, APE-Up Stream has bagged the first prize for their poster on the theme 'Role of Leadership in Driving HSE Culture' which they presented at the first Global HSE Conference held in New Delhi on 26-27 September 2013. The team comprised of Bhaskar Chakraborty, Kapil Mohan Awasthi, Mayank Mishra and Nayanshree.
The campus turned into a riot of colors over thefour days. Students were wearing the coloured T-shirts representing their specialization branches and participated in various techno cultural events. UPES B.Tech CSE branch successfully conducted the IBM Summer Excitement 2013 program recently. During the program, subject matter experts from Infosys, HCL Technologies and IBM delivered interactive sessions with the students.
UPES students secured 4th rank in CANSAT competition internationally and 2nd in Asia and 1st in India. UPES Aerospace CANSAT team participated in the competition held in US. In a tough competition among 120+ teams, UPES students stood Fourth in the world, Second team in Asia and First in India. Many teams from India including teams from IIT, SRM University, Amity and others also participated. CANSAT competition is organized by American Astronautical Society and closely monitored by NASA and Ivy League Universities. It is the most prestigious Aerospace competition in the world. International aerospace community takes note of CANSAT successes.
UPES holds Monsoon Management Magic (M3), a one of its kind orientation cum preparatory program for its fresh MBA batch. Students revel in a mix of classroom sessions, cultural and physical activities. Unlike preceding years, this time
the new incumbents were welcomed in an innovative manner. Their welcome was done amidst fun, cocurricular activities, cultural activities and classroom sessions. The program was very well designed with a mix of inside as well as outside-classroom activities.
College of Engineering Studies swiftly rolled out a two-week long orientation cum preparatory program christened Tech Tonic (T2) for its fresh batch of M.Tech students. The underlying philosophy behind the distinctive initiative 'T2' was to engage new students in a mix of activities combining fun, physical and cultural activities and classroom sessions in order to get them on board for the domain specific curriculum that they would be studying for the next two years.
FSAESUPRA 2011 stands for the Formula Race Championship that was held in Chennai from June 1st to 3rd, 2011 and team UURJA participated in this event along with 87 other Universities and Institutes from all over India. It is notable that UPES was the only University from the State of Uttarakhand to qualify for the challenging Championship and team UURJA performed well against stiff competition, scoring an impressive overall 17th position among 41 finalists to race. It is during the planning, preparation and execution of UURJA that the less recognized traits of students like leadership skills and team spirit get an opportunity to surface. It is during such functions where cross-pollination of students from diverse institutes and courses lead to stronger bonding which then converts into long term relationships.
First National Law Festival, “JUS CARNIVALLI”, stretching across three days, commemorated totally by students with perfect zeal and zest from 24-26 November 2010 . A congregation of students from law colleges across the country participated in the law carnival. In addition to a forum for conjunction of legal skills as well as social issues , judged by the luminaries of respective walks of life; a rocking Band performance by the college band and Prestorica, a DJ night were some of the highlights of the fest.
4 students of B. Tech Automotive Design Engineering won the Satellite Round (1st round) of Mahindra Auto Quotient Quiz held at UPES Campus on 12th Nov., 2013. The event was indeed a great success with over 130 teams participating, including 12 teams from other colleges like DIT, Graphic Era, etc.This team, Akash Mittal & Bharat Batra of B. Tech ADE Final Year and Udit Sharma & Raman Nain of B. Tech ADE 2nd Year, has also represented Uttarakhand region in the City Round at Delhi.
