UPES Power HR Roundtable: Skilled manpower need of the hour for growth of power sector

New Delhi, December 2, 2016: India has the fifth largest power generation portfolio worldwide but most of the discussions, plans and policies around this sector remain limited to generation, transmission and distribution of power. However, senior executives from leading public and private power companies gathered at the 6th Power HR Round Table organised by the Corporate Relations department of UPES to deliberate on ‘Measuring ROI in HR’.
In his inaugural address Rajeev Bhadauria, Director, Group HR at Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. commented, “Measuring ROI of human resource is as much an art as it is a science but it needs to be measured in the right context as no matter how much organizations get dependent on technology, it cannot replace employees. Human endeavour has the ability to dynamically change the world of tomorrow.”

UPES urges the need for new HR strategy for oil and gas sector

The 15th Oil & Gas HR Round Table held on August 26th, 2016 in Mumbai was definitely a successful milestone for UPES, as it witnessed significant participation and contribution from a wide array of corporates and senior professionals from all corners of India and beyond. This year’s theme revolved around the “Leading Human Resources In Business Cycle Trough”. Oil & Gas pioneers like Schlumberger, L&T, Emerson, Bharat Petroleum Corp, Worley Parson, Shell, and GE Oil & Gas were all a part of this event.

National Conference on “Executing Organizational Strategy  

PMI in association UPES as Knowledge Partner and Petroleum Federation of India (PETROFED) organized a one day conference titled “Executing Organizational Strategy: Leveraging the Power of Project Management” on 2nd September 2016 at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi. The conference was attended by senior Project Leaders, Project Directors, HR Directors and other relevant leaders from organizations in Public and Private Sector, Project Management Consultants, EPC firms etc. The business session "Developing the Project Organisation" was chaired by President, UPES, Mr. Utpal Ghosh during the conference with extended Panel Discussion "Building Project Management Capability across the Project Organisation". The panelists were Mr. M. V. N. Rao, Group HR Head (L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Ltd), Mr. Suresh Chopra, ED-Projects, Refineries Division (IOCL) and Mr. V.T. Chandra Shekar Rao, PMI Consultant. The session was very well appreciated by the audience and was outstanding.

International Conference on Intelligent Communication, Control and Devices-2016 

 The first international conference on Intelligent Communication, control and Devices-2016 was organized by the department of Electronics, Instrumentation and Control Engineering during 2nd & 3rd April 2016.

The Conference witnessed Prof. O.P.N calla, Dr. Pieter Jonker, Dr. Ragunathan, Dr. E.G.rajan and Prof. D.V.Gadre delivering the keynote lectures. 136 papers were selected for publication with Springer- AISC book series, from IITs, NITs, IIITs, BITs and other reputed organizations of the country and  14 posters were selected and they were presented in the poster session held on 3rd of April,2016.
A exhibition was also held on both the days for the projects developed by the students.

National Conference on “Water Resources & Hydro Power  

A National Conference on ‘Water Resources & Hydro Power’ was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, UPES from June 17-18, 2016. With an objective to spread awareness about management of water resources & optimal hydro-electric generation; the industry and academic experts across the country were invited at the Conference to deliberate upon the advancements in different aspects of water resources & hydro power engineering.
The Conference covered thought provoking discussions in the areas around the need to conserve & harness water resources and its uses for hydropower generation. The Chief Guest was Mr. Bhajan Singh, Managing Director, Pey Jal Nigam limited, Dehradun. The key note address was delivered by Padamshree Dr Avdhash Kaushal. Among other dignitaries present at the conference included Dr. B CK Mishra (Director, UJVNL), Dr. K Subramanya (Ex Professor IIT Kanpur), Dr. D. Nagesh (IISc Banglore), Dr.  Baldev Setia (Dean, NIT, Kurukshetra), Dr. D V S Verma (Ex Director, NIT Kurukshetra), Dr. V L Manekar (SVNIT, Surat),  Dr. Anu John (UNDP).

3rd Aerospace HR Round Table witnesses Bigwigs from Aerospace 

3rd Aerospace HR Roundtable in association with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was organized at Dr. V.M. Ghatage Convention Centre, HAL, Bangalore on 3rd June 2016. Retd. Wing Commander Shri Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel in space, was the Chief Guest of the event. The annual roundtable was attended by senior members of leading organizations like Boeing International Corp, NAL, TCS, L&T, Mahindra Aero Structures Ltd, Airbus & Airbus Group, India, Bharat Electronics Ltd and Safran. The conference witnessed discussion around the need for technology and innovation management for strategic advantage, role of academia, building high performance teams for aerospace excellence and emphasized on collaborative processes required to leverage aerospace business opportunities. 

Conference of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers R10 Mini POCO 

A day conference on “Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)” R10 Mini “Panel Of Conference Organizers (POCO)” was oganised on 11th June 2016 in collaboration with Next Generation Computing Technology Society (NGCT) and co-sponsored by IEEE R10 (Asia Pacific Region) & IEEE UP Section (India). The objective of this conference was to create awareness about intricacies of organizing an international conference. It provided a platform to share resources and ideas with all scientific associations and non-profit conference organizers to organize a Quality IEEE conference.
The Conference was inaugurated by Hon’able Chief Guest Prof. (Dr) P.K.Garg, Vice Chancellor Uttaranchal Technical University. The Guest of Honor was Prof. (Dr) S.N.Singh (Coordinator, IEEE R10, Conference & Seminar). The  other dignitaries who were present in the conference were Dr. Dilip Kumar Sharma (IEEE UP Section), Dr. A. K. Srivastava (IIT BHU), Dr. Alaknanda Ashok (UTU). The organizing committee members’ present was Dr. Amit Agarwal (V.P.-NGCT Society), Dr. Kingshuk Srivastava (Joint Secretory- NGCT Society) and others.

Maiden Law Round Table Conference congregates a Galaxy of Luminaries

The Law Round Table Conference was successfully organized amidst the who’ who from the legal fraternity in Delhi on 7th May 2016. The conference witnessed a galaxy of luminaries like Mr. Pavan Duggal – authority on Cyber Laws, Mr. Jyoti Sagar himself and his partner Mr. Amit Kapur, Mr. Lalit Bhasin President, Society of Indian Law Firms, Mr. Rupinder Suri Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Justice Manju Goel former Judge – High Court of Delhi, Mr. Venkataramani Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India & Member Planning Commission and many more graced the occasion and spoke at the conference. Meditative discussions revolved around the theme, ‘Skilling Legal Talent for Emerging Areas.’





Design Conclave

School of Design Studies organized a “Design Conclave” for the very first time in its campus at Bidholi. This conclave had two distinct components called ‘Design Dialogue’ and ‘Design Opera’. The ‘Design Dialogue’ saw three eminent personalities from the field of Design visiting UPES campus and speaking to the students of School of Design Studies, these included Mr. G. Sathiyaseelan, Design Head of Ashok Leyland, Mr. Satish Gokhale, Founding Director of Design Directions and Ms. Richa Ghansiyal a social entrepreneur and owner of Design & Development. It also included an interactive session with the well-known software company called “Autodesk”.



International Model United Nations (IMUN-2016) concludes in UPES

Addressing the Jam packed auditorium of UPES, Mr. B S Sidhu, Chief Guest at the “Valedictory” function of the 5th edition of Model United Nations organized by UPES advised the students that the ability of taking decisions in life is probably the strongest virtue one can possess. He encouraged the youth that they need to be courageous and should try to ingrain in them decision making abilities because it is these formative years where they have an early opportunity to imbibe this ability in their personality. Mr. Sidhu was appreciative of the fact that a team of UPES students is writing an approach paper on “Proliferating Migration of Uttarakhand’s Youth - Reasons, Remedies and Recommendations”. He then also gave a deep insight on the Indo-Nepal border challenges and issues which he advised would also have a bearing on the topic of research of the approach paper and also need to be incorporated.

3 Day International Conference on Management of Infrastructure concludes

This three day conference is being organized by UPES under aegis of Combustion Institute – India Section (CIIS). Mr Arun Dhand, Director of Media Affairs in UPES disclosed that Combustion Institute (CI) is an educational non-profit international scientific society founded 60 years ago in 1954 at Pittsburgh with the purpose of promoting research activities in combustion sciences. India is one of the 29 member countries of Combustion Institute and this chapter is known as Combustion Institute – India Section (CIIS) being headquartered in IIT-Madras. Keeping in view that India’s dependence on import of fossil fuel is expected to reach more than 53% of its consumption by 2030, underlines the need to develop efficient future Energy systems which are also environmentally compatible for sustainable development. The theme of this three day conference has therefore been kept as “Combustion for Energy Security with Sustainability”.
