Debjani Mukherjee received her PhD from the University of Auckland in 2017 in Media and Communication. She also holds an M.A. in Communications Studies from the University of Leeds, an M.A. in English Literature from Gauhati University, and a postgraduate diploma in Film Direction from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata. Her research focuses on the phenomenology, aesthetics and reception of film, and the architectural and sociological aspects of cinematic exhibition spaces. Her other research focus is the intersection between environment, activism and media, specifically how nature is mediated in the global south. Her documentary film practice which first emerged as a response to documenting the unique history and culture of northeastern India, has transformed to a more focused engagement with stories about the local environment of this region and its connection to community participation and the role of public institutions, and ways to strengthen the ecology at large.
