SDG 15: Life on Land

How we research Himalayan forests and wildlife, keep a green campus, plant trees across the Doon Valley, and help rural families earn a living from the land sustainably.

SDG 15.1Research for forests, wildlife and soils

UPES research supports Himalayan forests, wildlife and farmland, from fire detection and habitat mapping to medicinal plants and organic farming, and develops biological ways to clean polluted soil and water.

The figures below cover UPES research publications on land, forests, soils and biodiversity from 2021 to 2025 (source: Scopus, October 2026).

Research spotlights

Mapping habitats at Kuno National Park

From 26 April to 5 May 2025, five students from the HERE Technologies Centre of Excellence in the School of Computer Science worked with the Wildlife Institute of India, walking 2-kilometre transects to log animal sightings and GPS coordinates and surveying vegetation plots every 400 metres, to support habitat-density models.

Forest fires and mountain hazards

UPES SEED research projects study forest fire burning in Uttarakhand and its impact on the environment, and IoT-based early detection of flash floods and landslides in the Himalaya.

Medicinal and aromatic plants

The Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Laboratory, with its polyhouses and nurseries, trains and supports rural women farmers in nearby villages to grow tulsi, chamomile, lemongrass and stevia.

More research

  • Wildlife. UPES was a contributing organisation to the Leopard Report 2018 released by the Government of India.
  • The value of nature. Dr Mohammad Younus Bhat researches the economic value of Himalayan biodiversity in national parks and wetlands, and visitors' preferences for biodiversity conservation in Rajaji National Park (2025).
  • Healthier soils. Researchers turn organic waste into biochar and study bioremediation of polluted soil and water, and a microalgae wastewater plant produces bio-manure.
  • Social innovation for farming. The BIRAC-funded SWACHH Incubation Centre, led by Dr Nidhi Chauhan, mentors innovators working on climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable food systems.

SDG 15.2A green campus

UPES's campuses keep extensive tree cover and native plants.

  • Trees. Both campuses have extensive tree cover, and UPES plants trees with local schools and runs biodiversity workshops.
  • Herbal Garden. B.Pharm students grow native medicinal plants such as bael, neem, amla, pomegranate, fig and Indian jujube.

SDG 15.3Planting and restoring forests

UPES students and staff plant trees with the Forest Department, NGOs, schools and villagers across the Doon Valley.

10,000trees in the 2025 Reviving Doon Valley campaign
  • Reviving Doon Valley. UPES joined this regional reforestation drive, which grew in 2025 into a campaign to plant 10,000 trees across the Dehradun valley with partners including Flora Saviors and FICCI FLO. On 28 July 2025 Srijan interns helped plant in the Jhajhra Range, where saplings are geo-tagged and cared for over several years.
  • Tree planting by interns. Srijan Social Internship students have organised series of tree-planting events to promote sustainable urban development.

SDG 15.4Communities, livelihoods and learning

UPES helps rural women earn a living from the land sustainably and teaches young people to value nature.

4villages where farmers grow medicinal plants with UPES
  • Project Vikalp. Since 2015 this Rural Women Technology Park has trained women from neighbouring villages to make recycled-paper products and ICT-assisted crafts and to grow medicinal and aromatic plants, with help to market them.
  • Medicinal plant farming. The Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Laboratory trains rural women in Than Gaon, Birsani, Doonga and Masraajpatti to grow tulsi, chamomile, lemongrass and stevia.
  • Nature for schoolchildren. UPES plants trees with local schools and runs biodiversity workshops.
  • Awareness. World Environment Day, World Wildlife Day and wetland awareness events, and the GreenUp club's annual AtmosFair, bring experts and students together on biodiversity and conservation.
