Financial Assistance

UPES currently offers scholarships (part and full tuition fee waiver) in specific programs, as decided by the University from time to time. This may differ from year to year and is decided after the students complete their registration at the beginning of each academic year.

The scholarships are awarded purely on the basis of academic merit cum means, and are at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Committee, whose decision is final and binding.

25% concession on Tuition Fee for Uttarakhand domicile students on merit-cum-means basis, to be decided by the University, subject to fulfillment of the following conditions by the student

  • The student’s gross annual family income should not be more than Rs. 3 lakhs. The student should possess necessary documents attesting the fact
  • The student should be in possession of a valid ‘Sthai Niwas Praman Patra’ (domicile certificate) from the State of Uttarakhand
  • The student should have done schooling & passed Class X and Class XII from Uttarakhand (this condition may be relaxed for wards of Defence personnel subject to production of posting certificate outside the state issued by competent authority)
Education Loans

UPES has a formal tie-up with two of India’s leading nationalized banks. State Bank of India and Oriental Bank of Commerce are there to facilitate students’ access to easy education loans. The Education loans provide coverage for expenses including program fees and hostel fees.

Funded Research

A University’s worth, it’s ‘greatness’, should be judged by its value to the society. A number of key characteristics that will help us to define how this value might be measured are identified in the body of the Plan. It is vital though to begin by placing the essential elements on the platform to achieve greatness i.e. to build UPES as a truly Research and Innovation led University.

Since its establishment in 2003, UPES has been among India’s pioneering innovation driven University.  We have a fine tradition of developing domain specific and industry ready graduates. However, after getting our teaching and learning processes in the right direction, we must continue to harness our research potential as well.

With the completion of the first decade since our inception, we have come along with the creation of 12 virtual research centres and winning more than 25 research projects from National and International Funding Organizations; both in the public and private sectors. This must motivate us to further develop and nurture our R&D ideas in the domain of Energy, Infrastructure and Transportation (EIT). Following are 12 research centers:

  • Institute for Alternate Energy Research
  • Robotic Institute
  • Institute of NanoScience & NanoTechnology
  • Computation Research Institute
  • Environmental Research Institute
  • Center for Earth Sciences
  • Automotive Research Institute
  • Aerospace Research Institute
  • Center for Energy Economics Research
  • Centre for Infrastructure & Project Finance
  • Center for Supply Chain Research
  • Centre for Energy Law Research

UPES, with its strong R&D base and consultancy activities, has been the destination of choice for corporates who wish to conduct high quality and cost effective research in the energy and allied sectors. UPES undertakes research and consultancy projects related to the Energy and Allied sectors through its sister concerns.

During last more than five years, there has been a significant growth in the external funded research to UPES. We have completed projects funded by various agencies, such as, the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India; Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India; Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC); Uttarakhand Council of Science & Technology (UCOST) and International Association of Universities (IAU). These projects include 100 KW solar panel installation (Figure 1), New Chemicals for drilling & production of hydrocarbons, Technical Performance analysis of diesel ethanol blends in DI diesel Engine, Physio-chemical characterization of Gasoline samples, Consumption pattern of Automotive Lubricants and their Environment concerns, Development of Lab Facility for Biodiesel Production Centre and Research Capacity Development on Renewable Energy (with University of Nairobi, Kenya).

During the course of the R&D work, UPES has also developed few patented prototyped technologies. One such technology is Multfuel Neelam Cookstove (Figure 2), which is able to handle three different feedstocks (Forest biomass, Biogas from waste, LPG) individually or in combination. Except this, we have developed a miniaturized microfluidic viscometer for a variety of applications, including monitoring fuel adulteration, biofuel blending and biomedical diagnostics. Further, a Fuel injection system has been patented for compression ignition engines of stationary applications, particularly for diesel engine (Figure 3). Other such technology is an integrated and automotive Biomass Gasification Unit (Figure 4). This unit has been developed with an objective to meet the entire energy demands for a family of 10 persons. Few salient features of this unit is it’s amenability to convert lantana (A common weed found all over the country destroying forest land) to low tar gas, new design of down draft Biomass Gassifier, and throughput of 1 KW electricity and heat for cooking.

With all these efforts, UPES has several a state-of-the-art pilot scale units, including integrated Biodiesel plant (100 liters per day capacity) and biogas production units (total 100 m3/day). We have sophisticated instruments laboratory housing various equipments involved in the R&D activities in the aforementioned areas. We also collaborate with various organizations, nationally and internationally with a focus to develop partnerships with the organizations located in Dehradun and its vicinity. More information on R&D activities at UPES can be found from our website – www.research.upes.ac.in.

This enables professionals not only to enhance their academic credentials, but also to augment the body of knowledge of the energy industry through rigorous & scientific research methodology.

Dr. S. J Chopra, Chancellor of UPES is the guiding inspiration for research programs and can be contacted at chancellor@upes.ac.in

Industry Scholarships

Though maintained by the UGC and accredited by NAAC, UPES is not a recipient of grants or financial aid from any government body.

However, UPES is unique in the respect that it has the unflinching support of the corporates, associations, societies and individual professionals in the Energy and Allied sectors.

The industry provides UPES in multiple ways; from allowing access to their vast knowledge bases and valuable experience to field visits in otherwise inaccessible installations; from laboratory equipment, books and sports facilities to scholarships and endowments.

Corporations have endowed UPES with financial as well as knowledge assistance and we are grateful for their continued contribution. In fact, many scholarships have been set up by professionals in their individual capacity as well.

Petronet LNG (PLL) has sanctioned an endowment of Rs. 2 crores to establish a Chair-Professorship in the LNG business. With this magnanimous help from PLL, UPES has appointed Mr. Tom James, Principal with Deloitte, UK in the area of Energy Trading and Price Risk Management as the Chair-Professor.

The ONGC Schlumberger Wireline Research Centre – JRC has endowed Rs. 85.12 lakhs to the University. The cheque was handed over to Dr. S. J. Chopra, Chancellor, UPES by Mr. S. V. Rao, Executive Director (Exploration & Production Unit) at the 4th convocation. The endowment was the result of the announcement made by Shri R. S. Sharma, CMD ONGC, Guest of Honour at the 3rd Convocation.

In addition, the following awards have been instituted by professionals in their individual capacities to further the cause of Excellence in Energy Studies:
