Dr. Abdullah announced his willingness to provide research grants to UPES in the area of non-conventional energy, to benefit not only the country, but entire mankind. He later inaugurated a 100 KW Solar Power project at the campus which has partly been funded by the MNRE. The estimated annual electricity generated by the plant will be 1.2 lakh KW. This will have an estimated CO2 reduction of 270 tons, and will be able to feed 1/3rd of UPES’ annual power requirement.
Five Doctorates were awarded to working professionals and faculty of UPES. The awardees were:

- Mr. Kamal Bansal, Adjunct Professor, CoES, UPES (Analysis & Redesigning of Watermills for Sustainable Development of Rural Areas of Uttarakhand)
- Mr. Atul Razdan, Associate Professor, CoMES, UPES (Comparison of Service Quality of Select Non-fuel Offerings of Three National Oil Companies after Liberalization till 2008)
- Ms. Neelu Jyoti Ahuja, Associate Professor, CoMES, UPES (Rule Based Expert System for Seismic Data Interpretation)
