1st June 2010 saw the congregation of a host of dignitaries at the Energy Acres campus in scenic Dehradun. The air was abuzz with excitement as Smt. Margaret Alva, Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Shr S. Sundareshan made their way to the dais.
In her address, Smt. Alva heralded UPES as, “the first energy and core sector university across the entire Pan Asian region”. She foresaw a role for UPES in determining India’s energy security, which in turn, would shape its political destiny. She also lauded the university’s community development efforts.

Dr. Abdullah announced his willingness to provide research grants to UPES in the area of non-conventional energy, to benefit not only the country, but entire mankind. He later inaugurated a 100 KW Solar Power project at the campus which has partly been funded by the MNRE. The estimated annual electricity generated by the plant will be 1.2 lakh KW. This will have an estimated CO2 reduction of 270 tons, and will be able to feed 1/3rd of UPES’ annual power requirement.
Five Doctorates were awarded to working professionals and faculty of UPES. The awardees were:
- Mr. J. L. Raina, Secretary General, Petrotech Society (Organizational Turnaround based on “Management by Indian Ethos”)
- Mr. A. S. Prasad, Director, Project Emerson Process (A comparative study of location attractiveness of BRIC nations for O&G Engineering Services Outsourcing {O&G ESO} and strategic growth options for India’s O&G ESO industry)
- Mr. Kamal Bansal, Adjunct Professor, CoES, UPES (Analysis & Redesigning of Watermills for Sustainable Development of Rural Areas of Uttarakhand)
- Mr. Atul Razdan, Associate Professor, CoMES, UPES (Comparison of Service Quality of Select Non-fuel Offerings of Three National Oil Companies after Liberalization till 2008)
- Ms. Neelu Jyoti Ahuja, Associate Professor, CoMES, UPES (Rule Based Expert System for Seismic Data Interpretation)
