How we open learning to people beyond our classrooms, through research, free resources, public events, skills training and outreach in local schools and communities.
UPES report on Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
How UPES contributes to quality education
At UPES, education does not stop at the classroom door. The university researches how people learn, opens its libraries and free resources to anyone, invites the public onto campus for lectures, festivals and summits, trains working professionals and community workers, and sends faculty-mentored volunteers into government schools and villages every week.
4.8 lakh+library volumes, with free resources open to all
14local schools supported under the EDUDHURMA CSR policy
700+pupils in Samagra Shiksha partner schools
541PhD scholars training as researchers
450+NSS volunteers teaching and mentoring
We research learning
From blended learning to AI tutors for learners with disabilities, UPES studies how people learn and teach.
We open our resources
The UPES Library shares free learning resources, open research and much of its collection with people beyond the university.
We open our campus
Festivals, summits, lectures and competitions bring the public, industry and other institutions onto campus, most of them free.
We train for work
Skills centres and short courses train engineers, professionals, public servants, health workers and future teachers.
We teach in our community
Student volunteers teach English, Maths, science and digital skills in government schools and villages near campus.
We include everyone
An inclusion policy, scholarships and accessible resources open education to learners with disabilities and from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Research spotlights
Games that teach empathy
Dr Manisha Mohan's PhD, supervised by Dr Naveen Kumar, showed that immersive media and game-based learning can build empathy among nursing professionals in India. It won the UPES PhD Best Thesis Award in 2025.
Pedagogy for well-being and sustainability
Prof Padma Venkat, Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Technology, focuses her current research on new teaching approaches that build wellness and sustainability into university campuses. Her community work includes training rural women and self-help groups in green technologies and safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
Students as researchers
Through the SHODH scheme, students carry out their own research projects under faculty mentors, building towards products, patents and start-ups. From the 2026 intake, UPES also admits students to a PhD straight after their undergraduate degree.
Learning from global educators
In March 2025 Dr Fiona Freeman of Nottingham Trent University spoke at UPES on co-creating highly skilled postgraduates through outcome-focused education. Neuropsychologist Dr Knut Hestad later led a six-session classroom series on depression, HIV-related cognitive deficits, the mind–body interface, and ageing and dementia.
Building research capacity
UPES runs faculty development programmes that keep its teachers and PhD scholars up to date with national research priorities. A recent programme on India's BioE3 policy and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) brought experts, faculty and PhD scholars together on biomanufacturing, the bioeconomy, sustainability and new routes to research funding. In 2024–25, six faculty development programmes on artificial intelligence in health care, open to faculty from across UPES, recorded 842 participations (UPES Annual Report 2024–25[47]).
Learning with the Himalaya
The Himalayan Institute for Learning and Leadership (HILL) at UPES works on sustainable solutions for the Himalayan region by bringing together academia, research institutions and communities through research, capacity building and knowledge sharing. Its Himalayan Fellowship is an immersive programme that takes students out of the classroom and into mountain communities, using homestays and fieldwork and treating local communities as partners in learning rather than research subjects. HILL also builds skills and livelihood opportunities for women across the region with national and international partners.
Teachers keep learning too. A five-day Faculty Development Programme, Effective Pedagogy: Practice and Policy Alignment, run by the School of Computer Science from 28 July to 1 August 2025 at the Bidholi campus, trained faculty in learner-centred, inclusive and outcome-based teaching.
Dr Knut Hestad during his classroom series at UPES.A session on the science of depression.
Patents and intellectual property
In UPES's mapping of its intellectual property to the Sustainable Development Goals, Quality Education is one of the ten goals the portfolio covers (UPES R&D, December 2025).
2Free learning resources for everyone
The UPES Library opens a large part of what it offers to people who do not study at UPES: its website, free learning materials and much of its collection.
Anyone can use the library's online resources and visit its campus facilities free of charge, and the free courses it signposts lead to a certificate.
Impact
Anyone can learn from UPES: its library website, free learning resources and much of its collection are open to people beyond the university.
4.8 lakh+print and digital volumes
~190free learning resources curated online
64research databases
2campus libraries open to walk-in visitors
A free Open Educational Resources portal points anyone to open journals, free certified courses and digital libraries.
UPES PhD theses are deposited in ShodhGanga, India's national open repository.
A section for people with disabilities offers screen reader software and virtual labs.
Free online resources for anyone
Open Educational Resources portal. The library website, open to all, curates around 190 free resources by subject, from open-access journal directories such as DOAJ and BASE to case law, statutes and law commission reports, health science databases and dictionaries.
Free courses and lectures. It points learners to free and certified online courses on SWAYAM, NPTEL, e-PG Pathshala and Swayam Prabha, along with the National Digital Library of India, MHRD Virtual Labs and free audiobooks.
Open research. UPES deposits its PhD theses in ShodhGanga, the national open repository run by INFLIBNET, so anyone can read them. Its researchers' profiles and publications are public on IRINS.
Accessible learning. A section for Divyangjan (people with disabilities) offers screen reader software and virtual labs.
Libraries and facilities on campus
Two campus libraries. The Bidholi library (about 22,500 sq ft) and the Kandoli campus library, with branch libraries for law, management, design and health sciences, open from 8:30 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. The Kandoli library also opens on Sundays.
Walk-in visitors. The library's fair-use guidelines list onsite visitors among the authorised users of its licensed e-books, e-journals and databases, alongside students, faculty and staff.
One search for everything. A KOHA-based online catalogue and an EBSCO Discovery search cover the print and digital collections, including 382 theses, 3,189 dissertations and 4,582 e-standards.
Shared with other libraries. Through DELNET and the e-ShodhSindhu consortium, UPES lends and supplies documents to other institutions' libraries.
Other facilities. UPES opens its amphitheatres and Multi Activity Centre for public events such as Virasat, and its 12-inch telescope for free sky-gazing nights (see Section 3).
UPES also runs free courses that end in a certificate for people outside the university, such as computer hardware and networking training for inmates of Dehradun District Jail and DigitalDhaam's digital skills training for villagers (see Sections 4 and 5).

Open to everyone
UPES's commitment to equal access runs through these activities. Its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy[23] commits the university to equal opportunity and to tackling bias and discrimination, and its Anti-Discrimination Committee[24] acts on discrimination on grounds including gender, caste, religion or belief and disability. The Policy on Inclusion of Students with Disability[25], aligned with India's Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, requires campus services, events and activities to be inclusive and accessible, and buildings and facilities to be designed or modified for access. Most public lectures, festivals, outreach programmes and the library's online resources are free, so cost is not a barrier to taking part.
