M.Des. Industrial Design/ Transportation Design/ Interaction Design

M.Des. Transportation Design

Transportation industry is one of the vastest industries that cater to the needs of the movement of the masses as well as material. The entire sector encompasses varied verticals of products, processes & systems where intervention of ‘Design’ – i.e. bettering the existing design, can create the ‘unique differentiation’.

Quite a few Industries have their in-house Design departments or Design Studios where specialised groups carryout design research, sketching & rendering of new concepts, digital 3D modelling to real-life scale clay models and prototyping, all these sub departments work in coherence to create a new vehicle or upgrade an existing one.

The focus of this M. Des Program in Transportation Design at SoDS is to cater to the design needs of the entire transportation industry which ranges from water transport to air transport and include, mining & material movement vehicles, special purpose vehicles such as those used in defence etc.

Since majority of the candidates are expected to be from the Engineering background, apart from creative concepts, they will focus on the engineering, manufacturing, materials, and technology integration issues.

The students of Masters of Design go on to work in the transportation design industry at lead roles which not only includes designing new vehicles but also work closely with the management and marketing to create new avenues and various modes as well. The two year program spans across 4 semesters with specific inputs in each semester - along with a Project in each semester; - the 1st Semester being the Foundation, the 2nd. & the 3rd. semesters on specialization and during the 4th semester, the student, at the individual level, take on a real-life Project in an Industry whereby, s/he is expected to carry out a full-fledged project delivery in terms of ‘understanding the brief to execution / delivery of the final concept’ – in some cases, the outcome may be in physical form and in certain cases, the final concept with manufacture-worthy detailed drawings, material & process specifications etc.

Career Pathways

Products for Automotive OEMs, Automobiles – 2 / 3 / 4 Wheelers,Systems & Processes for Transportation, Heavy / Construction Vehicles, Railways and Electromotive units(EMUs), Water Transportation Products & Systems etc.

M.Des. Industrial Design

Industrial Design is a process to create new products which are to satisfy the needs of the masses as well as for the specific needs of any particular group of users. The process deals with understanding the needs of the users, create concepts through sketches, understand the material, texture colour requirements, create mock-up and 3D models to execute the idea into making of a tangible product. The course at SoDS aims at creating designers who have a strong thought process and deep creative thinking regarding the subject.

Application of Industrial Design ranges from designing kitchen products, table-top products, electronic products, bio-medical products to jigs & fixtures for spatial design / applications, furniture systems etc.

Apart from a large number of Design Firms, some Industries have their own in-house Design Departments or Design Studios where specialised groups carryout design research, sketching & rendering of concepts of new products, digital 3D modelling to prototyping, all these sub departments work in coherence to create a new product or re-Design an existing one. They are some of the potential employers of graduate students of Industrial Design

Since majority of the candidates are expected to be from the Engineering background, apart from creative concepts, they will also focus on the engineering, new process development, manufacturing, materials, and technology integration issues.

Design of FMCG Products, Machines, Lighting systems,Bio-Medical Products, Industrial Products, Packaging,Lifestyle products & Accessory Design, Electronic Products & Appliances, Space / Ambiance / Exhibitions Design, Furniture Design, Design Research, etc.

M.Des. interaction Design

With the continuously evolving newer ‘models and styles’ of ‘interaction’ and emerging paradigms in Interaction design (including IoT) with technologically advanced ‘smart’, ‘intelligent’ products and processes, this program at the SoDS would focus on the fundamentals & application methodologies of various kinds of interactions on digital products (including web based products & solutions) ranging from the hand-held mobiles, web based to dynamic ones in gaming, education, transportation, healthcare, banking, retail and other domains.

This program is aimed at equipping the students with the capability of creative conceptualization of various kinds of Interfaces & Interactions (styles & forms) in various domains for specific kinds of users; - the process will include, user research, knowledge of certain fundamentals, their application methodologies in realizing newer forms of Interaction in the physical as well as in digital media.

This Program in Interaction Design has been structured in such a unique way that the students will not only gain the fundamental understanding of UI / UX & their application methodologies but also gain knowledge about the ‘Frame work and Factors’ that influences ‘Interaction Design’. - These include, Information Design, Information Architecting, Graphics & Various forms of visual media), the concepts of ‘Inclusion’ and ‘Service Design’.

During the program, the students will have the opportunity to go through at least 3 ‘Design Projects’ – wherein the students will learn the ‘process of Interaction Design’ - credit will be given to those ones who can take the ‘concepts’ up till ‘realization’ at the bread-board level. Students are expected to be passionate & be aware of the emerging digital product trends.

As User Interface Designer, Interaction Design, User Experience Design for Smart products& systems, Web-based Products, Interfaces for on-line transactions, Interface for Control – Display Panels for Industrial Control Systems etc.
