India is one of the most rapidly developing countries in the world. It is witnessing growing industrialization and thus development. Such rapid development needs energy to progress, which further makes India an energy hungry nation. Currently India depends mainly upon fossil fuels and thus has to pay a huge bill at the end of every contractual period. These bills can be shortened and the expenditures brought down by using and exploiting non-conventional sources of energy. India holds a huge potential for such non-conventional sources of energy.
The rapid development of India is not just pressing hard upon its resources but forcing expenditures on the same. There are also some neglected side effects of this development process like, generation of waste. A population of 1.2 billion is generating 0.5 kg per person every day. This, sums up to a huge pile of waste, which is mostly landfilled in the most unhygienic manner possible. Such unmanaged waste not only eats up resources but demands expenditure as well. This can lead to the downfall of an economy and degradation of the nation.
Thus, the paper presents waste to energy as a solution to both the problems stated above, using which not only can we reduce the amount of waste, but also produce energy from the same, thus achieving our goal of waste management as well as energy security. The paper presents the current status, major achievements and future aspects of waste to energy in India which will help decision makers, planners and bodies involved in the management of municipal solid waste understand the current status challenges and barriers of MSWM in India for further better planning and management.

While turning young engineering and management graduates into entrepreneurs is often piped as crucial for our country striving for sustainability in our energy needs is also imperative. Aaron Eipe John, a student of M Tech. (Energy systems), College of Engineering Studies, UPES perhaps aims
to have a shot at both! Aaron, a mechanical engineer (B.E.) from Anna
University in the year 2011 is a budding technocrat who dreams of
making products which run on renewable energy sources.
Some of the projects he has worked on include a ‘Fuel efficient kiln’, ‘ Cheap energy efficient passive solar tracking using water’,‘Pneumatic bike designed for petroleum industries’, ‘Mechanical regenerative Braking on a 4-wheeler’, ‘Non degradable hydrocarbon waste to fuel conversion’, “Hydrogen Fuel supplement for diesel engines” etc. Aaron is presently working on designing and fabrication of a project titled “Heat to Refrigeration in Automobiles and Air-‐conditioners” which involves both CoES and College of Management and Econimics Studies for designing and marketing the technology. Putting such innovative ideas into practice for using renewable energy is what the budding entrepreneurs and technocrat of our country should take a lead from.

Trained on a wide variety of technical concepts involving design analysis and manufacturing of Airplanes, Rockets, Missiles, Space Launch Vehicles, UAVs, etc, UPES aero-engineers are performing ahead with time. Recently a couple of them have been awarded at various competition for performing best in the area. These include NASA Systems Engineering Award. Among others, few were involved in creating in-house UPESSAT – UPES Nano Satellite Flight Test by creating a prototype using a weather balloon at low altitude test, which is the first nano satellite made in Uttarakhand.
