An Assignment-design scheme to inculcate self-reliance and integrity in students for effective teaching and learning in engineering education

Many of the core engineering streams like Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace and Chemical Engineering constitute strongly of what we call “real-world problems”. Again, a lot of the courses in these undergraduate curricula involve subjects that involve playing with concepts, formulae and numbers and getting the solutions, a practice which they are supposed to carry to their professional careers. The recent trends in engineering education amply show that in order to coach students with these vital skills of facing a “real-world problem” and to be able to formulate it in terms of the learnt concepts and the required and feasible assumptions – requires much more than the routine approach taken by engineering instructors. Most engineering instructors often solve example problems in their regular lecture sessions, and needless to say, the students are expected to be able to solve the problems of similar type in their tests. While the classroom examples may serve as a sheer demonstration of the concepts taught then, the exams are but too timed and constrained to be fully able to test the cognitive and engineering skills of the students. In such a situation, the importance of real-world assignments assumes great importance. However, one of the major and main pitfalls of the current system of homework assignments is obvious. The students often are too reluctant to understand the concepts and undertake the challenge of solving the assignments. Rather, a much easier route exists – of simply copying the assignment of a colleague (which can possibly be transmitted conveniently over the electronic media). This defeats the very purpose of imparting engineering skills in the students and facilitates them to “take-the-easy-route” of dishonesty and irresponsibility, traits which may prove detrimental for our future budding engineers.

We employ an innovative mechanism of preparation and transmission of homework assignments that completely obviates these problems associated with teaching and learning. In a joint collaboration with Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of HBO, we have prepared a software tool to facilitate teaching and learning in numerically oriented courses of departments such as Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, to name a few. The developed mechanism is very time-efficient for the faculty and that compels a student to face such engineering challenges and stand on their own merit, while simultaneously stimulating interactions within student communities promoting cooperative learning. Another important part of the project also involves pilot studies in numerical-based courses of second and third-year undergraduate curriculum centred at gauging the effectiveness of the proposed system – through performance metrics, student anonymous feedbacks and improvement in the performance of slow learners.
