Smart grid and computing represent a new generation of hardware, software and network that connect physical infrastructure with analytic computing systems. Smart grid is the emerging energy system wherein the application of information technology, tools and techniques make the grid run more efficiently. Frequently occurring high impact low probability natural disaster and cyber-attack creates the need for future-ready resilient smart grid. The challenges and opportunities of emerging and future smart grids can be addressed by computing techniques. The objective of this minor specialisation is to provide different computing applications for energy management in the smart grid architecture and science of resilient smart grid against natural disaster and cyber-attacks.

Academic Framework

The foundation of higher learning at UPES since its inception has been to explore and promote areas of learning that are innovative and future focused. This has led to constant evolution in facilitating creative and collaborative learning engagements for students through realignment of curriculum and exploration of virtual tools, and open-source courseware; thereby creating borderless learning and access to limitless information.

The new curriculum framework at UPES, ABLE (Academic Blueprint for Learning Excellence) is holistic in its overall structure and yet focuses on the individual need of the student to discover, experience, explore and challenge. The learning is segmented into core subject studies, core specialism studies, minors/exploratory subjects, and signature and life skills learning. The latter three are offered by the newly-instituted School for Life.

SFL (School for Life) is an intrinsic part of the composite UPES student experience and facilitates learning and education that is a balance between what students want, and what is needed of them as future global citizens and leaders of tomorrow. With courses designed to equip students with lifelong learning skills, a focus on a wide range of contemporary issues, and a mandatory social and professional internship experience that is unique, UPES believes in igniting to inspire the best version within an individual to better the world.

PEO 1: Graduates will have the scientific and technical knowledge to have successful career in Industries & Electrical Engineering.

PEO 2: Graduates will have competency to analyse challenges and advancements in the focus areas of E-Vehicles, Electrical Machines, Power System, Control & Automation, Embedded Systems, AI application to Electrical Engineering & collaborative engineering industries.

PEO 3: Graduates will be motivated and confident to pursue advanced education, research and development and other creative efforts in electronics engineering and allied areas.

PEO 4: Graduates will have higher-order thinking and leadership skills to become technology leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

PEO 5: Graduates will contribute to the welfare of society and environment by taking sound professional and responsible technical decisions.

PSO 1: The student shall be able to Analyze and Design Electrical Systems for various industrial applications.

PSO 2: The students shall be able to Install, Operate and Maintain Electrical Power systems.

UPES has collaborated with the online Learning Management System, Coursera, which provides the student access to world class courses from leading universities across the world, with top-notch academicians conducting the courses.

Academic –Industry interaction is a regular practice at EEE Department UPES. More than 100 workshops, guest lecture has been conducted for the students. Students are also encourages to visits the industry establishments. Industry specific certification programs are conducted by Industry experts and at the industrial premises that helps students to gain, hands on industrial experience. Summer internship at the domain specific industry and Industrial Visits are part of curriculum and are credited courses.

The B. Tech Electrical Engineering program has signed MoU with TATA Power as well.

Glimpses of the some of the workshops/industrial visits are as following:

  • Workshop on Condition Monitoring: Two days workshop on Condition Monitoring by Mr. Hemant Bari, DGM, DTPS, Dahanu, Mumbai, Maharashtra
  • Interactive session with Dr. D.P.Kothari, Former Director, IIT Delhi.
  • Interactive Session with Industry leaders at Industry premises (Reliance, Shahjanhpur)
  • Alumni Interaction. Mr. Krishna (2014 passout) working as Project Engineer at Noida Power, interacting with students.
  • Visit to Thermal power Plant, Raipur.
  • Mr. Sanjay Raich, Chief Engineer, Tata Steel (Raipur); interacting with students.
  • Thermal Power Plant Simulator training at Essar Power Plant, Jamnagar
  • Students get opportunity to interaction with senior officials of Industry (DTPS, Dahanu)
  • International workshop with support of Purdue University faculty, Chicago, USA
  • Workshop on Hands on experience on eVehicle
  • Students are Encouraged to participate at the various technical and co-curricular competitions held across the world.
  • More than hundreds of students have participated at the various competitions and technical events and won the prizes.
  • Students are also encourages to take the national level competitive examinations as GATE, CAT etc.
  • International student exchange program is the crown of the department. Under student international exchange program, Indian students will get opportunity to visits, international universities and also students from other countries like Canada, France, Russia study at the department.

Some of notable achievements are as following:

  • Mr. Raghav Chawla & Ms. Anukruti, have got fully funded summer internship at ‘Total Oil, France’
  • Mr. AnkshitDixit, got an opportunity at international exchange program to study at TOMSK Polytechniqu, Russia.
  • Ms. Tanushree, work French scholarship during her international Exchange Program.
  • Three Students from department won AEE, USA scholarship:
  • Students received prize for their paper at IIT, Roorkee
  • Alumni of department Mr. Shubhnkar, serving for nobel cause ‘Teach for India’
  • IEEE Student chapter: Students are motivated to showcase their leadership and organizing skills through IEEE Student chapter activities
