Dr. Gaurav Pandey

Dr. Gaurav Pandey earned his joint Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2020. Dr. Pandey completed his M.Tech degree in Petroleum Engineering from IIT Madras in 2015. His recent research interests focus on clean energy, oil and gas storage, and climate change, with a special emphasis on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7 and 13). He has contributed to 8 book chapters and published 13 peer-reviewed papers in reputable international journals. Dr. Pandey has been invited to deliver talks on emerging topics such as Clean Energy, Energy Transition, and Enhanced Oil Recovery in countries including the United States, Singapore, Mauritius, Japan, Thailand, Russia, and India. His journal citations exceed 400, and he holds an h-index of 10 and an i10-index of 10. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He is a recipient of various prestigious scholarships and fellowships like GATE, MHRD fellowship and NUS research scholarship.

Prior to joining UPES, Dr. Gaurav Pandey held the position of an HTRA and served as a research scholar while pursuing his Ph.D. from 2015 to 2020 at IIT Madras and NUS Singapore. Subsequently, he continued as a post-doc researcher at IIT Madras from February to August 2020. Dr. Pandey joined UPES as an Assistant Professor in September 2020 and was promoted to Assistant Professor (senior scale) in March 2022. Since January 2022, he has been serving as the Visiting Chief Scientist and leading the Gas-Hydrate laboratory at Earth Cryosphere Institute, Tyumen State University, Tyumen, Russia.

Dr. Pandey's research interests encompass various areas, including clean energy, clathrate (gas) hydrates, sustainable energy, hydrogen energy, energy storage and transport of fuels, flow assurance, rheology, carbon dioxide capture, storage & utilization (CCS & U), enhanced oil recovery, drilling fluids, and oil & gas nanotechnology.

Dr. Pandey believes in cultivating critical thinking, encouraging scientific research discussions, fostering proficiency in scientific content writing, and promoting independent comprehension among students to nurture the development of innovative research concepts. This approach not only enriches their foundational knowledge but also equips them for internships and placements. Dr. Gaurav Pandey employs a diverse array of instructional tools, including audio and video aids, demonstrative lectures, presentations, simulation studies, assignments, case studies, as well as project and dissertation work.

Dr. Gaurav Pandey teaches courses such as Drilling Engineering, Advanced Drilling Engineering, Enhanced Oil Recovery Techniques, and Drilling and Production Operations to master's (PG level) students of Petroleum Engineering. He also instructs undergraduate (UG level) students of Applied Petroleum Engineering in courses like Mechanics of Drilling Engineering, Drilling Engineering and Well Construction, Reservoir Engineering, Oil Field Development, Oil and Gas Informatics, and Unconventional Energy Resources.

Dr. Gaurav Pandey boasts an array of awards and grants, including the distinguished "Bhagyalakshmi and Krishna Ayengar Award" for outstanding PhD thesis/project research in the realm of alternative energy application at IIT Madras. He has also secured the "Institute Research (IR) Award" for commendable research work undertaken at the same institution. Additionally, his academic prowess was recognized with the "Academic Excellence Award" at UPES in 2023. Furthermore, Dr. Pandey has successfully secured project grants from the Siberian Branch-Russian Academy of Sciences (SB-RAS) in Russia. Notably, he has also been a recipient of internal grants from UPES Dehradun, including SEED and Shodh projects.

Dr. Gaurav Pandey has established international research collaborations with research groups in various countries, including Russia, Singapore, Oman, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia. Additionally, he has fruitful research partnerships with multinational companies such as ONGC, SLB, Cairn, and Exxon Mobil. These collaborations have proven highly beneficial for students, providing them with opportunities to attend international conferences and secure internships for practical exposure. Dr. Pandey has successfully obtained SEED and Shodh internal research grants from UPES, leading to prestigious ACS COLL-PUI awards twice, as well as L-Austin grants for the students under his guidance. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Gaurav Pandey was honoured as UPES Star faculty in 2021. He has also served as a session chair at esteemed conferences, including the ICGH 10 conferences organized by the National University of Singapore in Singapore in 2023 and the AOTULE Conference held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan in 2019. Dr. Pandey actively participates in the scholarly community as a reviewer for reputable journals such as Applied Energy (IF: 11.2), Gas Science and Engineering (IF: 5.285), Energy & Fuels (IF: 5.3), Industrial Engineering & Chemistry Research (IF: 4.2), ACS Omega (IF: 4.1), and International Journal of Green Energy (IF: 3.2).
