Assistant Professor
Profile Summary
Dr. Achala Shakya was awarded Ph.D. from the Computer Engineering Department at National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra. She was also associated with the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar Mission (NISAR) project under the project entitled ‘Fusion of SAR and optical data for advance LULC classification’. She has completed a pilot project entitled ‘Kernel-based Noise Clustering Fuzzy Classification’ at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun. She has more than 4 years of research and 1.6 years of teaching experience. Her prime research areas are Image Fusion, Segmentation, Classification, Optical, Radar, and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, and Web Development. She has published several research articles, book chapters in SCI/WOS/Scopus-indexed journals/conference proceedings, and books. She also has four international patents granted with her name. For the last three years, she has been continuously serving as the brand ambassador and proctor of IEEE Programming Competition. She also edited a textbook entitled LINEAR PROGRAMMING. She is an active Member of IEEE, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions, and a lifetime member of Indian Society of Remote Sensing. She is an active reviewer of several International Journals of high repute and has reviewed several research articles since 2019.
Work Experience
Prior joining UPES, Dr. Shakya was associated as an Assistant Professor with the Computer Science and Engineering department at Sharda University, Greater Noida (U.P.), India.
Research Interests
Dr. Shakya is working in the field of Image Fusion and Segmentation, Geo-informatics, Optical, Radar, and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, Deep Learning, Machine Learning.
Teaching Philosophy
Dr. Shakya’s teaching philosophy is grounded in the understanding that it is her responsibility to encourage students towards learning new things and applying the technology to real-world scenarios. She has incorporated some elements of “flipping the classroom” into her classes such as pre-reading assignments, in which students read assigned sections of the textbook and/or other resources prior to coming to class where they complete a short quiz. Quiz material is not repeated in class but instead is used as the foundation for in-class assignments that involve students working with real data and situations. Using authentic problems helps students move from novice to expert thinking.
Courses Taught
Digital Logic and Computer Organization, Natural Language Processing, Compiler Design, Algorithm for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, etc.
Awards and Grants
She was invited to join as a Ph.D. scholar at Cardiff University in Cardiff School of Computer Science and Informatics, U.K. in the year 2017. She has received volunteered certificate for proctoring and overseeing competing teams for the IEEEXtreme 16.0 programming competition.
Scholarly Activities
She has mentored various B.Tech. projects (3rd and 4th year) and always keeps on motivating students for filing patents as well as writing research papers.
- Course coordinator for B.Tech. 2nd & 3rd year
- Activity coordinator of B.Tech. 3rd year.
- Subject Coordinator
- Conducted T3 for CL & NLP
