B.Des Industrial and Product Design

B.Des Industrial and Product Design

Program Details

The B.Des in Industrial and Product Design builds capability to design, develop, and produce products that meet human needs, enhance user experiences, and contribute to a sustainable future. The program strengthens conceptual thinking, user research, and market understanding, while addressing materials, manufacturing processes, and environmental impact.

Collaboration with engineers, marketers, and other professionals is embedded into the learning process to ensure that designs meet both technical and commercial requirements. Graduates are prepared to create products that are aesthetically refined, functional, durable, and accessible across domains such as consumer electronics, medical devices and sustainable packaging.

Program Highlights

  • The curriculum builds skills step-by-step and stays current, with a focus on human creativity working alongside logical AI.
  • Students learn in state-of-the-art labs and studios, with VR facilities, prototyping workshops, 3D printing support, and material-testing labs.
  • Industry exposure is integrated through co-creation projects, including classroom collaborations with industry partners.
  • The program develops AI-aware design judgement, using AI to support ideation and iteration while maintaining clear design intent.
  • Learning is hands-on, progressing from digital modelling to physical prototypes using both emerging and conventional methods.
  • Co-creation formats provide real-world problem-solving experience, demonstrating how product design is delivered within organisations.

Industrial Design is shifting from creating static objects to designing intelligent, adaptable, and regenerative systems. This shift increases the importance of Generative and Agentic AI for testing structural integrity, optimising topology, and producing complex CAD geometries for material efficiency. The field is also advancing through smart materials and 4D functionality, including self-healing polymers, thermochromic textiles, and shape-shifting structures, alongside circular and regenerative design practices such as Design for Disassembly and repairable, upgradable lifecycles.

As hardware and software increasingly merge, designers are expected to work with phygital ecosystems and Digital Twins to simulate performance and predict maintenance needs.

Opportunities span high-growth sectors such as consumer electronics and IoT, drones and mobility, healthcare and bio-design, sustainable systems and packaging, furniture and smart living, and immersive tech and hardware. Job roles include:

  • Junior Industrial Designer
  • 3D Modeler
  • Computational Designer
  • CMF (Colour, Material, Finish) Specialist
  • Sustainable Design Strategist
