Manas Ranjan Mishra

With over 20 years of expertise, Prof. Manas Mishra is a renowned designer and educator. He's a master of Industrial Product Design from IIT Delhi and an Electrical Engineer from IGIT Sarang. Currently, he heads UPES School of Design's Industrial and Product Design Department and is the SPOC for Internationalization and Industry outreach. With vast experience in design education and consultation, he has led workshops for major corporates like HCL, INFOSYS, and MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA. Pursuing his PhD from UPES, he's guided 190+ Master of Design projects and secured 85+ design patents. Prof. Manas is a respected member of various design schools' Board of Studies across the country.

Prof. Manas Mishra's academic journey spans various distinguished roles. He began as an Assistant Manager in Design and Development at KILCo PVT Ltd, followed by Assistant Professor positions at M. S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies and Design Faculty at Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology. Since July 2014, he has been a dedicated Professor at UPES School of Design, enriching the design education landscape with his extensive experience and commitment.

Prof. Manas Mishra's research interests span a wide spectrum of design domains, including Product Aesthetics, User-Centered Design, Design for Social Impact, Inclusivity, Ergonomics, Smart Products, Biomimicry, Healthcare Design, Design Psychology, Mobility Solutions, Education Environments, Disaster Relief, Multicultural Design, Ethics, and Wearable Devices.

Prof. Manas Mishra's industrial design teaching philosophy is student-centred and holistic, focusing on creativity, critical thinking, and practical application. He emphasizes hands-on experiences, project-based learning, and user-centred design, fostering problem-solving skills and industry relevance. Prof. Mishra underscores the ethical aspects of design, promoting sustainability and social responsibility. He mentors students individually, aiming to cultivate compassionate, forward-thinking designers who blend technical proficiency with human-centred principles for lasting contributions to industrial design.

In the School of Design (SOD) at UPES, Prof. Manas Mishra has taught a diverse range of courses, fostering students' understanding and skills in various aspects of design. His courses include foundational subjects such as Elements and Principles of Design, as well as more specialized topics like Biomimicry in Design and Design for the Future. Through courses like Understanding Design and Design Process, Design Research Methodology, and Advanced Design Tools, he imparts essential knowledge and techniques for effective design exploration and development. Prof. Mishra also guides students through practical applications with courses like Model Making Techniques, Product Analysis and Detailing, and Packaging Design. Moreover, his emphasis on design projects ensures that students gain hands-on experience and the ability to tackle various design challenges. Prof. Mishra's commitment to holistic design education is evident in his wide-ranging curriculum that equips students with both foundational principles and advanced skills for a successful career in industrial design.
