Dr. Roshni Sengupta

Assistant Professor – Selection Grade

Dr. Roshni Sengupta is Senior Assistant Professor (Assistant Professor – Selection Grade) at the School of Modern Media, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPE), Dehradun. She was previously Assistant Professor at the Institute of Intercultural Studies, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland; Assistant Professor, Institute of Middle and Far East, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, and Assistant Professor at the Leiden Institute for Area Studies, Leiden University, Netherlands. She has been an Associate Fellow of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden since 2016.
Among her published work is the book monograph Reading the Muslim on Celluloid: Bollywood, Representation and Politics (Primus Books, 2020), and the co-edited volumes Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Gender and Culture in Contemporary Literature, edited by Parul Yadav, Roshni Sengupta, and Chandni Sengupta (Authors Press, 2021), and Film, Media, and Representation in Postcolonial South Asia: Beyond Partition, edited by Nukhbah Taj Langah and Roshni Sengupta (Routledge, 2021). Her co-edited volume Narratives of Loss and Longing: literary developments in postcolonial South Asia with Nukhbah Taj Langah is forthcoming from Routledge in 2023, while she is currently working on a volume on visual politics of contemporary Bengali cinema (Routledge) and an ambitious handbook on marginality in Indian cinema (Palgrave Macmillan).
Roshni has published several articles in indexed, peer-reviewed international journals such as Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies (Taylor and Francis), Society and Culture in South Asia (Sage), Diaspora Studies (Brill), Economic and Political Weekly etc. as well as peer-reviewed chapters in books published by Routledge, Brill, Sage, and so on.
An alumnus of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi and Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Roshni earned a PhD in Politics from JNU and thereafter worked on post-doctoral research at the Leiden Institute for Area Studies, Leiden University, The Netherlands as an Erasmus-IBIES Post-Doctoral Fellow in 2015-2016. She was awarded the Rector’s Award for Distinguished Scholarship in the academic year 2019-2020 by the Jagiellonian University, Poland for her research contribution.
