CanSat is a highly prestigious space related competition organized by American Astronautical Society (AAS), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)
Team Astral consisting of Engineering and Design students waved the UPES and India flag high when it won the highly coveted CanSat 2017 top prize. CanSat is a prestigious annual design-build-fly competition with space related themes organized by American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). 40 teams from across the globe competed in the finals held in Texas, U.S.A recently.
Team Astral – a highly spirited, passionate and dedicated 23 member team consisting of students in Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering and design studies.
As the name suggests CanSat or Canister Satellite involves building of a ‘satellite in a can’. During CanSat a team has to design and fabricate the Mission Statement provided by the organizing committee and finally launch it at the competition site. As per this year’s mission statement UPES team developed a solar powered science glider that travelled through the planetary atmosphere, sampled the atmospheric pressure, temperature, speed etc. and sent the readings of the gathered data wirelessly to the ground station.
Team Astral’s members specializing in various domains utilized their respective subject knowledge in developing a perfect glider. Students from aerospace engineering were responsible for making the control surfaces of the glider like wings, elevator and rudder. Material Science students ensured that the team meets glider’s mass constraint of 500gm by choosing right materials for fabrication without compromising on strength. Design students ensured the final product looked impressive while keeping its functionality intact.
