BSc. (Hons.) Mathematics/B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics by Research

Program Details

The B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics / B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics by Research at UPES School of Advanced Engineering (Applied Sciences Cluster) is a four-year undergraduate program aligned with NEP 2020, built around academic flexibility, multidisciplinary learning and outcome-based progression. The program runs across eight semesters (up to 20 credits each) with multiple entry and exit options—students may exit after 120 credits with an undergraduate degree, or complete 160 credits to earn either B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics or B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics by Research. The Research pathway includes research methodology, supervised research and a defended dissertation evaluated by an expert panel, and the four-year degree supports direct PhD entry (with coursework) in India and abroad, as per norms.

Applied Mathematics Focus: Designed for learners who want to use mathematics to solve real-world problems across science, engineering, technology, finance and data-driven domains. It blends mathematical modelling, computation and analysis, with strong exposure to numerical methods, optimisation and data analysis, preparing students for industry roles, interdisciplinary research and applied postgraduate study.

Program Highlights

  • NEP 2020-aligned four-year structure with multiple entry/exit options and lateral entry as per norms.
  • Two outcomes: B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics or B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics by Research (with defended dissertation).
  • Applied track built around modelling + computation + problem-solving for practical, interdisciplinary challenges.
  • Strong foundation for industry-facing roles and research-led applied pathways.

Applied Mathematics is increasingly central to data-driven decision-making and complex system design. Graduates are well-suited for roles in data analytics, business intelligence, financial modelling, risk analysis and actuarial pathways, as well as technical opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, energy and technology-driven industries where optimisation and modelling skills are critical. The specialisation also aligns well with roles in R&D organisations and scientific laboratories, and supports progression to higher studies in Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computational Science and interdisciplinary programs.

Typical roles include:

  • Data Analyst / Business Analyst
  • Quantitative Analyst (Finance, Risk, Insurance)
  • Operations Research Analyst
  • Actuarial Analyst
  • Research Associate (R&D)

Placements

Graduates typically progress into analytical and quantitative roles across industry and R&D, with career pathways that leverage numerical methods, optimisation and applied modelling in business, finance and technology-focused sectors.
