Renaissance - The National Space Convention 2020
Uttarakhand witnessed its second National Space Convention, Renaissance 2.0 in collaboration with Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre (USERC), Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) of United Nations and SPACE INDIA, organised by Infinity Space Club – the Department of Aerospace Engineering, UPES. The inter-university national level space convention took place on 21st and 22nd February, 2020 in UPES, Dehradun with the support of its Media Partner, World of Science and Sponsors, CADD and Rocketeer India.
Day 1 of Renaissance 2.0 witnessed full participation of 150 students from Uttaranchal Institute of Technology, Dehradun, Chandigarh University, Chandigarh, Ryan International Rohini, Delhi, Summerfield School, Dehradun and Sacred Heart School Ludhiana. The day commenced with the Opening Ceremony having the prominent presence of Shri Kusum Lata Sharma, Director of Ministry of Civil Aviation. One of the most exciting events for the participants was the Solar Observation wherein professional, Mr. Tarun Sharma came from the Space India, Delhi to demonstrate the significance of observing the Sun with the solar filters via telescope. The first day ended with the jewel on the crown event of Observation Night where students got to observe the celestial bodies closely one by one.
Shri V. M. Chamola is the Ex Director, Human Resource at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The students were enlightened by the words of Mr. Chamola when he talked about his organization and associated ongoing projects and work ethics at HAL. Dr. Durgesh Pant is among the earliest adopters and pioneers of Computer Science and Information Technology and is currently the Director of Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre (USERC). He motivated the audience with his speech that centered around Indian Space community and its scope in the near future.
The audience was engrossed when Dr. Tessy Thomas The Missile Woman of India - stepped on the podium to address! She is currently the Distinguished Scientist & Director General at Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO). She was the Project Director for AGNI-4, becoming the first woman in India to lead a missile project in the country. She presented the young minds with a presentation on Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, an introduction about the ongoing ISRO projects and development on missiles and lastly, India's Aerospace industry's progress on a global level. It was followed by an interaction session wherein the participants cleared the clouds in their minds regarding the Indian Defence and Missile systems and got to hear her side of the journey so far!
Afterwards, the flagship and non flagship events of Endeavour (treasure hunt), Destinesia (space quiz), Astrometrica workshop and webinar session with NASA scientist, MARCOS PENA. He is the man behind the Artemis mission and graduated from Miami Dade College and completed his higher education from the University of Central Florida. He was a part of Sigma Gamma Tau – National Honor Society of Aerospace Engineering. He is FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) certified in Airframe mechanics & Aircraft maintenance technology from George T.Baker Aviation.
RENAISSANCE, the National Space Convention was a brainchild of the students of Infinity Space Club. The idea of conducting a national space convention of one of its kind for the first time in 2018 was nurtured and nourished by the continuous support from the UPES Administration, Dr. Kamal Bansal, Dean of Academic Development & Innovation and School of Engineering, Dr. S.J. Chopra, the Chancellor of UPES and the tremendous support from the Department of Aerospace Engineering which has been a constant pillar of strength for Infinity Space Club, especially Dr. Sudhir Joshi, the Head of Department and Faculty Mentors, Mr. Zozimus Labana and Mr. Vipin Kumar.
