Profile Summary
Seerat Gill is an Assistant Professor at the School of Law, UPES Dehradun. She holds a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, where she graduated as the batch topper (Rank 1). She is a UGC-NET JRF Awardee.
Her research interests include women and the law, equality and discrimination law, constitutional law, family law, and human rights. With a strong academic foundation from premier national and international institutions, she brings a comparative and socially conscious perspective to legal teaching and scholarship.
Work Experience
Seerat Gill has been associated with premier national and international institutions during her academic journey. During her time at Oxford, beyond the academic curriculum, she supported Hertford College’s academic environment by working with the library team and also actively volunteered with Girlguiding UK.
At RGNUL, Punjab, she held representative positions in the IQAC and Academic Support Committee and also served as a teaching assistant. In addition, she has gained professional exposure through internships with organisations such as FabLittleBag (UK), Amnesty International India, and the Punjab State Legal Services Authority.
Research Interests
Women and the Law, Equality and Discrimination Law, Constitutional Law, Family Law, Human Rights.
Teaching Philosophy
Seerat’s teaching philosophy blends pedagogy with the creation of a supportive classroom environment. She emphasises the use of carefully chosen, high-quality reading materials that help students connect law to society and everyday life. Her student-centred approach combines doctrinal teaching, comparative perspectives, and interactive methods such as case discussions and problem-solving exercises.
She places equal importance on creating an inclusive environment where all students feel encouraged to participate. She aims to create a classroom rooted in respect, curiosity, and collaboration, where diverse viewpoints are welcomed and critical thinking is nurtured.
Courses Taught
Seerat is currently teaching Insurance Law, Labour Law-II, and Fundamentals of Moot Court.
Awards and Achievements
Seerat was awarded UGC-NET JRF with 99.91 percentile in the June 2025 cycle. She was ranked 1 among 177 students at RGNUL Punjab. She was also awarded the Anand Legacy Scholarship in 2022 by RGNUL Punjab for securing first rank in her batch up to the fourth year.
Scholarly Activities
Seerat has authored nine publications, including two chapters in books published by Thomson Reuters, one chapter in a book published by Singhal Law Publications, two articles in peer-reviewed journals, and four blog articles. These works span diverse themes such as gender justice, disability rights, medical negligence, arbitration, and privacy.
She has also presented her work at numerous conferences. Her recent paper presentations have particularly focused on the intersection of law and gender. In addition, she has completed certificate programmes from international bodies, including Amnesty International Human Rights Academy, the United Nations, and the United States Institute of Peace.
