Profile Summary

Rongeet Poddar is nearing completion of his Ph.D. at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata. His doctoral research focuses on the rights derogation clause in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Mr. Poddar also obtained his LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from WBNUJS. Having attained an All India Rank of third in the Common Law Admission Test (UG) in 2015, he pursued the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) programme from the same institution.

He is an emerging legal scholar with strong academic grounding in public international law, human rights, and comparative legal studies. His academic work reflects rigorous engagement with contemporary global legal challenges and normative frameworks.

Work Experience

Before joining the School of Law at UPES, Mr. Poddar was a researcher for an Indian Council of Social Science Research-sponsored joint collaborative research project undertaken by WBNUJS and National Law University, Delhi. He was also an Academic Fellow at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, where he co-taught students in the five-year B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) and the Master's in Public Policy programmes.

He has also had a short stint as Assistant Professor of Law at Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata, besides brief industry experience as a corporate lawyer in Mumbai.

Teaching Philosophy

Mr. Poddar believes that the classroom should be a site of fruitful dialogue and experiential learning. The role of a teacher is to cultivate academic freedom and stimulate originality of thought. Students should not be reduced to passive recipients of information but must be encouraged to think critically about the normative foundations of a discipline.

In addition to explaining the fundamentals of a subject, a teacher must also remain aware of the different capabilities and accessibility requirements of individual students so that pedagogical methods can be adapted accordingly.

Awards and Achievements

Awarded an Academic Fellowship by the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru. Conferred the Deshapran Sasmal Raksha Samity Endowment Medal at WBNUJS for securing the highest grade in the International and Comparative Law stream during his LL.M. Recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 11th International Conference on Urban Warfare and Protection of Refugees organized by the Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights at the Institute of Law, Nirma University.

Scholarly Activities

Mr. Poddar has published in several journals of repute such as the National Law School of India Review and the Indian Journal of International Law. His forthcoming publication is in the Journal of Indian Law and Society at WBNUJS. He was recently invited to present a segment of his ongoing doctoral research at the International Law's Local Encounters: Experiences and Imaginaries of (De-)Coloniality workshop at the University of Amsterdam.

He has presented papers at international and national conferences organized by institutions including Jindal Global Law School, the Indian Society of International Law, National Law School of India University, Kathmandu School of Law, IIT Kharagpur, and the University of Indonesia. Mr. Poddar has also written extensively for online news platforms and academic blogs on legal issues of contemporary relevance.
