Profile Summary

Saumya Yadav is an Assistant Professor at the School of Law, UPES, Dehradun. She holds an LL.M. in Corporate Laws from NLU Jodhpur and an LL.B. from Banaras Hindu University. She also earned a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Botany from Hindu College, University of Delhi, reflecting her multidisciplinary academic background.

A film enthusiast with strong interdisciplinary interests, she is currently pursuing her Ph.D., focusing on labour frameworks for child actors in the entertainment industry. Her research intersects law, film studies, and the emerging field of Critical Childhood Studies, demonstrating a unique blend of legal scholarship, humanities, and social inquiry.

Work Experience

Before joining UPES, Saumya undertook freelance teaching assignments, delivering courses such as Law of Torts, Jurisprudence, and UP Land Laws. Her teaching experience has strengthened her classroom engagement and adaptability across diverse legal subjects.

Teaching Philosophy

Saumya’s teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking and encourages students to look beyond statutes and textbooks. She views the classroom as a dynamic space for both learning and unlearning, enabling students to question preconceived notions and develop broader perspectives.

Inspired by Roscoe Pound’s concept of social engineering, she considers law students as future contributors to societal transformation. She also integrates popular culture, particularly Bollywood, into her pedagogy to make learning engaging and relatable, especially in the context of law and cinema.

Courses Taught

Saumya teaches courses on Jurisprudence and Law of Contract I. 

Awards and Achievements

Saumya’s paper won third prize while being published in the Supremo Amicus journal. She was also an acclaimed debater during her college days and won numerous prizes in debating competitions. 

Scholarly Activities

Saumya has published research papers as well as chapters in edited books focusing on labour law, gender justice, and corporate law. She presented a paper titled Judge Centric to Justice Centric – A Critical Analysis of Sentencing Jurisprudence in India at the International Conference on Criminology and Criminal Justice, 2024, organized by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. 

Additionally, she has contributed several book chapters focusing on gendered dimensions of labour, child labour, and examining labour through a mythic lens. Her scholarship reflects a strong interdisciplinary engagement with law, justice, and social transformation.
