Dr. Vinita Chhetri is a distinguished history educator and academician committed to cultivating an inclusive, engaging, and intellectually stimulating learning environment that promotes critical thinking and a meaningful appreciation of the past. She strives to make historical concepts relevant and accessible to students, encouraging them to explore, question, and connect historical developments with contemporary issues. 

She holds a Ph.D. in History, completed through a project funded by the Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. In addition, she has earned an M.Phil and successfully qualified the UGC NET and UP SLET examinations for Lectureship. Her academic journey has equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of historical events, legal frameworks, and India’s rich cultural heritage. 

Work Experience

Dr. Chhetri has been teaching at UPES, Dehradun, for the past 17 years, with academic specializations in Legal History and Indian History. Prior to joining UPES, she served on the faculty of IMS Law College, Dehradun, and earlier held a visiting faculty position at Amity University. In addition to her academic roles, she has collaborated with several non-governmental organizations engaged in social welfare initiatives.

Teaching Philosophy

Her teaching philosophy is centered on making the study of history accessible, engaging, and intellectually enriching. She strives to cultivate a genuine appreciation for the discipline while strengthening students’ research and analytical abilities through dynamic lectures, collaborative projects, and the use of diverse multimedia resources. 

She encourages learners to draw connections between historical developments and contemporary legal and social institutions, value multiple perspectives, and participate in informed, open discourse. To enhance learning, she provides pre-class materials—including texts, films, and interactive online modules—allowing classroom sessions to focus on deeper discussion, critical inquiry, and practical application of historical concepts. 

By actively engaging students in the learning process, she helps them attain a more meaningful and nuanced understanding of historical events, themes, and debates. 

Courses Taught

She has taught a range of courses in History, Legal History, and World History. Her teaching emphasizes the value of humanities education—encompassing literature, art, history, and the social sciences—in shaping well-rounded law students. Through these courses, students gain insight into the historical evolution of legal systems, the social and cultural forces influencing legal norms, and the broader societal implications of legal decisions. 

Integrating humanities into legal education supports holistic intellectual development, fostering creativity, critical inquiry, and a broad understanding of global contexts. 

Scholarly Activities

Dr. Chhetri has authored and published eight books on a range of historical subjects, contributing meaningfully to scholarship in both history and education. These works offer valuable insights for scholars and students, particularly in the areas of Indian History and Legal History. 

She actively participates in national and international seminars and conferences, where she presents research papers and engages in scholarly dialogue, ensuring continued involvement in contemporary historical discourse. She has delivered lectures and presentations at numerous academic forums worldwide, fostering cross-cultural understanding and enriching her own perspectives. 

In addition to her academic publications, she regularly contributes articles to leading diplomacy-focused periodicals, offering historical analyses with emphasis on their relevance to international relations. Her writings frequently appear in magazines such as Diplomatist and Diplomacy & Beyond, where she examines bilateral issues and connects historical developments to current global affairs.
