UPES Students Meet Prof. William Sax

About

The UPES School of Liberal Studies and Humanities hosted Prof. William Sax, Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University, for an immersive lecture series exploring religion, culture and lived traditions across South Asia.

From The Dance of the Pandavas to Comparing Tantra in India and Indonesia, alongside reflections on Nanda Devi, the Goddess of Uttarakhand, the series brought global scholarship into dialogue with regional traditions and lived realities.

The week-long academic engagement gave students an opportunity to interact with a leading voice in anthropological studies and experience scholarship beyond textbooks.

The session offered students an interdisciplinary perspective by connecting International Relations, Public Policy, Economics, Technology and Society, and Global Diplomacy.

Objective

The lecture series aimed to deepen students’ understanding of how religion, culture, ritual and regional traditions can be studied through anthropological research and fieldwork.

Through interdisciplinary conversations, students explored the connections between traditional belief systems, lived cultural practices, comparative religious studies and contemporary academic inquiry.

The initiative also encouraged students to approach cultural traditions with sensitivity, curiosity and critical thinking while understanding their relevance within local and global contexts.
