Work Experience

Before joining UPES in 2022, Dr. Sharma completed postdoctoral research at two highly reputed institutions, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai, for a combined period of five years. He earned his Ph.D. from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai. 

He also served as Assistant Professor in the School of Liberal Studies and Humanities at UPES from June 2022 to June 2025.

Teaching Philosophy

Dr. Sharma’s teaching philosophy focuses on student-centric learning processes. He believes in motivating students by citing examples from daily life and uses his extracurricular skills in origami and art to create models and visual aids relevant to mathematical concepts. 

He strongly believes in giving students hands-on exposure to topics through rigorous tutorial sessions, helping them build conceptual clarity and confidence in problem-solving. 

Courses Taught

Dr. Sharma has taught courses in Calculus, Analysis, Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Python, and Big Data during his time at UPES. 

Awards and Grants

Dr. Sharma received the University Gold Medal during his Master’s degree at the University of Hyderabad in 2011. 

He was a National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Junior Research Fellow from 2011 to 2013 and Senior Research Fellow from 2013 to 2016. He was also awarded the prestigious SERB National Post-Doctoral Fellowship from 2017 to 2019 by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Government of India. 

Scholarly Activities

Dr. Sharma has designed Mathematics courses for the B.Sc. Economics with Data Science programme of the School of Liberal Studies and Humanities at UPES. He has presented his research at conferences in India and abroad and has been invited to deliver talks at premier institutions such as the IITs, IISER Pune, and the University of Hyderabad. 

He has published research papers in leading peer-reviewed journals including Linear Algebra and its Applications, Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society, Communications in Algebra, and Journal of Algebra and Its Applications. His research includes work on commuting matrices, branching rules for unitary and symplectic matrices, and finite Coxeter groups. He also has ongoing work currently under review.
