Profile Summary
Professor Mukesh Sharma is an accomplished professor of engineering. He began his career as a researcher in optoelectronic and photonic device engineering before stepping into academics. Dr. Mukesh is passionate about interdisciplinary research of integrated Liquid crystal-metasurface composite system-based devices and light-matter interactions. His research has appeared in prominent journals from reputable publishers such as Science, ACS, Wiley, Elsevier, IEEE, OPTICA, Springer Nature, IOP Science etc., and has been featured in international media outlets including Science Advances magazine. Some of his favourite courses in the area of electronics, electromagnetic theory, digital electronics and advanced nanoscale devices.
Work Experience
Before joining UPES, Dr. Mukesh Sharma has 8+ years of experience in the design and development of optoelectronic devices. He is experienced in design, fabrication and characterization of novel optical devices for practical applications. After his PhD from IIT Delhi, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Tel-Aviv University, Israel and NTU Singapore where his research was focused on development of hybrid liquid crystal-optical metasurface platform based tunable optical devices. He also worked as an Associate Professor in ECE Department at SR University Warangal and a Research Assistant in CSIR-CEERI, Pilani, India.

Teaching Philosophy
Prof. Mukesh’s teaching philosophy is grounded in his belief that teaching is a continuous process of learning skills and research belongs to creating knowledge by continuous investigations. He believes the research along with teaching is more fruitful and productive as students can connect with real world problems, their solutions and applications. It fosters a vibrant, collaborative learning environment that nurtures students to become sharper thinkers, innovative problem solvers, and confident decision-makers.
Courses Taught
Prof. Mukesh Sharma has taught courses on Basics of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electromagnetic Theory, Network Theory, Digital Electronics, Advanced Nanoscale Devices and Research and Publication Ethics.
Awards and Grants
Prof. Mukesh Sharma was awarded the prestigious ANRF Prime Minister Early Career Research Grant (PMECRG) 2025. He was also awarded Incubic Milton Chang Grant 2021 from OPTICA USA foundation. He was also granted prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships from NTU Singapore and Tel-Aviv University Israel in 2023 and 2018-2023, respectively.
Scholarly Activities
Prof. Mukesh Sharma is passionate about research on the emerging technologies of active and reconfigurable optoelectronic and photonic devices including hybrid Liquid crystal-metasurface platform-based nanoscale devices. His research has appeared in prominent journals like Science Advances, Laser & photonics reviews, Advanced optical materials, ACS photonics, IEEE JLT etc. He has also served as an active peer reviewer and reviewed >90 manuscripts for >25 high-quality journals including Science Advances, Nature reviews bioengineering, Laser & photonics reviews, Advanced optical materials, ACS photonics, Advanced functional materials, Advanced photonics research, IEEE sensors journal, Photonics research, Reports on progress in physics etc.
