Pawan Kumar

Assistant Professor, School of Advanced Engineering, UPES Dehradun

Profile Summary

Dr. Pawan Kumar is a Mechanical Engineering faculty member specializing in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Bio-fluid Mechanics, Immersed Boundary Methods, Hemodynamics, Thermal Sciences, and High-Performance Computing. He holds a B.Tech from AKTU, an M.Tech from NIT Jamshedpur, and a Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur, where he conducted CFD-based hemodynamic assessments of coronary arteries using immersed boundary methods. He has also contributed to projects on cardiovascular assist devices and hyperloop-based high-speed transport systems.

Work Experience

Before joining UPES, Dr. Kumar worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at IIT Kanpur on a model cargo-hyperloop project and served as a Project Consultant at IIT Kharagpur for the development of a cost-effective LVAD. His doctoral tenure at IIT Kharagpur and NPTEL teaching assistantship further strengthened his expertise in CFD, cardiovascular modeling, energy conservation and waste heat recovery, and thermal-fluid sciences.

Research Interests

His expertise spans CFD applications in biomedical flows, physiological hemodynamics, immersed boundary methods, high-performance computing, thermal-fluid systems, heat transfer, and waste heat recovery. Alongside his ongoing research in biomedical engineering through CFD simulations, he is also developing expertise in aerodynamic analysis within aerospace engineering. His interests further include computational modelling of biomedical devices and advanced numerical strategies for engineering analysis.

Teaching Philosophy

Pawan believes in building strong conceptual foundations in thermal sciences and strengthening students’ intuition through application-oriented learning. He integrates CFD simulations, analytical reasoning, and real-world engineering problems into his teaching to help students connect fundamental principles with practical design and research applications. He emphasizes clarity, curiosity, and hands-on exploration to develop independent and industry-ready engineers.

Courses Taught

Awards and Grants

Received the MHRD Doctoral Scholarship to pursue Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, awarded on a merit basis.

Recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding contribution as a Teaching Assistant in the NPTEL course “Energy Conservation and Waste Heat Recovery”, offered by Prof. Prasanta Kumar Das and Prof. Anandaroop Bhattacharya, IIT Kharagpur.

Scholarly Activities

Dr. Pawan Kumar works in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a strong focus on thermal engineering and biomedical flow physics. His expertise includes developing immersed-boundary CFD models for coronary hemodynamics, stenosis assessment, and aerodynamic as well as thermo-fluid analysis of engineering systems. He has published his research in Scopus- and Web of Science–indexed journals, contributing to the understanding of internal flow physics, blood-flow behaviour in coronary artery models, and thermo-fluid interactions in complex domains. He also serves as a reviewer for journals in fluid mechanics and thermal sciences. His ongoing work explores computational modelling for low-cost healthcare device design, energy-efficient thermal systems, and advanced biomedical flow simulations.
