Dr. Sanjay Bhutani

Dr. Sanjay Bhutani is a distinguished professional in the field of sustainability and environmental management, bringing over 37 years of rich and diverse experience from India’s premier energy sector. After an illustrious career in ONGC, where he superannuated as Chief General Manager in June 2022, he transitioned into academia to contribute his extensive industry knowledge to the next generation of sustainability leaders. Since 1st February 2023, he has been serving as a Professor of Practice in the Sustainability Cluster at UPES, Dehradun. 

During his tenure in ONGC, Dr. Bhutani held several high-impact leadership roles, including Head of Institute, INBIGS, Jorhat, and key responsibilities such as In-charge HSE, In-charge EC/FC, CSR Monitoring, and Nodal Officer for COVID-19. His earlier roles at ONGC Academy included heading capability development groups and leading initiatives in sustainability, risk management, and corporate communications. Renowned for his expertise in sustainability strategy, environmental compliance, QHSE, and capacity building, he continues to inspire students and professionals through his industry experience, leadership insight, and commitment to sustainable development. 

Dr. Sanjay Bhutani brings over 37 years of distinguished experience, including an extensive career at ONGC and his current academic role at UPES. Since February 2023, he has been serving as a Professor of Practice (Consultant) in the Sustainability Cluster at UPES, Dehradun, contributing to teaching, research, and industry–academia collaboration in sustainability and environmental management. Prior to this, he superannuated from ONGC as Chief General Manager, having led major functions such as INBIGS, Jorhat, HSE, EC/FC, CSR Monitoring, and COVID-19 management.

Dr. Sanjay Bhutani’s teaching philosophy centers on not only imparting subject knowledge but also meaningfully integrating his extensive industrial experience to enrich classroom learning. He believes education should go beyond concepts and cultivate critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and a strong sense of social responsibility among students. His approach focuses on connecting theory with real-world applications and encouraging learners to develop sustainable solutions. 

Dr. Sanjay Bhutani has taught a wide range of interdisciplinary courses across Health, Safety, Environment, Sustainability, and Leadership. His teaching portfolio includes Disaster Management, Disaster Risk Management, ESG, Occupational Health & Safety, Management Systems & Auditing, Behaviour-Based Safety, Environmental Risk Assessment, and Leadership in Safety. 

Dr. Sanjay Bhutani received the Young Executive of the Year Award, ONGC (1993), followed by the Director’s Award for Best Published Paper (1994) and the 1st Director’s Award for Best Published Paper (1998). He also received the Director (Onshore)’s Award for Best Paper (2007), the Best Teacher Award by UPES (2024), and was selected for the Environmentalist of the Year Award by NESA, Delhi. 

Dr. Sanjay Bhutani has made extensive scholarly contributions in the domains of Environment, HSE, Sustainability, and QHSE systems. He has presented or published over 110 research papers at national and international forums, including platforms such as the University of Sheffield (UK) and Singapore University. As Managing Editor of Sustaina – Journal of Environmental Governance and Sustainability, he actively promotes interdisciplinary research. 

He has served as session chair in multiple international conferences and has supervised more than 165 dissertations across M.Tech, B.Tech, M.Sc., MBA, and Petroleum Engineering domains. He has also delivered expert lectures at premier institutes including FRI University, Doon University, SRHU, UPES, and ONGC training centres. His scholarly engagement includes authoring and compiling two books on Environment Management and contributing to national-level environmental audits and policy development.
