Profile Summary

Jayant has joined the UPES School of Design as a Professor of Practice in September 2023, after a professional career at Tata Motors for over three decades.  

A 1991 alumnus from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Jayant previously headed the Pune Design Studio for Tata Motors. In this capacity he saw through several programs ranging from passenger cars to commercial vehicles. His design interests include sustainable mass transport, the establishment of OEM design studios, automotive brand identity and DNA philosophies, and full-program mentoring.  

In his time away from work, Jayant retains significant interests in outdoor photography, hiking, reading across domains, and jazz/classical guitar study.

Work Experience

Jayant has 32 Years across Creative Design and Design Management roles at Tata Motors Pune and its subsidiaries. He was heading the India Design Studio for Tata Electric Mobility as the final role with the organization. He has also contributed to academia at the MIT School of Design and DYP-DC in Pune as a Jury member and has facilitated student design workshops.

Research Interests

Jayant has primary interests in future mobility and design for mass transportation. He would also like to work across knowledge domains in furthering and formalizing design teaching methodologies.

Teaching Philosophy

Jayant places an emphasis on “learning through doing”, and encourages the observation and understanding of contexts. He has a significant interest in contributing to Foundation courses, as these are critical for successive specialized learning.

Geometric Construction for Foundation (till date). Design Projects for Mobility and Vehicle Design, and Design Process for Foundation (planned for the next Semester).
