Jitender Upadhyay
Assistant Professor
Profile Summary
Professor Jitender Upadhyay is a design educator and researcher specializing in User Experience Design, Human–Computer Interaction, and Inclusive Design. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at IIT Guwahati, where he contributes to research in usability, user behaviour, and design decision-making processes. A Gold Medalist from Tezpur University (M.Des.), he brings a strong foundation in design methods, interface principles, and human-centred thinking.
With exposure to diverse technical and operational environments, Jitender has developed a deep understanding of system complexity, user needs, and workflow challenges. This experience informs his approach to simplifying interactions and designing meaningful user experiences. His scholarly work includes a conference publication with Springer, and he continues to explore emerging methods that strengthen user research and design evaluation.
He is passionate about cultivating reflective and analytical designers who can connect user insights with thoughtful design outcomes.
Work Experience
Before joining UPES, Prof. Ghavri worked on multiple creative and research-based projects, including an initiative funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
Prof. Jitender Upadhyay is currently serving as a faculty member at the School of Design, UPES Dehradun, where he teaches courses in User Experience Design, Human–Computer Interaction, and Interface Design. He is simultaneously pursuing his Ph.D. at IIT Guwahati, contributing to research in usability, user behaviour, and design decision-making.
His exposure to diverse technical and operational environments has deepened his understanding of system complexity, user needs, and workflow challenges, which he brings directly into his teaching and research practice.
His professional practice spans photography, illustration, filmmaking, and visual communication, with work grounded in both artistic exploration and design research methodologies.
Research Interests
User Experience Design (UX) | Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) | Interaction Design | Usability Evaluation | User Research Methods | Inclusive Design
Teaching Philosophy
Prof. Jitender believes design education must blend conceptual clarity with practical exploration. His classroom approach encourages students to question assumptions, analyze user behaviour, and ground design choices in evidence.
He emphasizes iterative prototyping, case-based discussions, and empathy-driven evaluation, fostering a learning environment where students grow into thoughtful, responsible, and user-aware designers.
Courses Taught
User Experience Design | Human–Computer Interaction | Interface Design | Design Research Methodology | Usability Testing and Evaluation | Foundations of Design
Awards and Achievements
Gold Medalist in Master of Design from Tezpur University. Recipient of the Academic Excellence Award in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies. Presented a research paper at ACED 2023, selected for publication by Springer.
Scholarly Activities
Prof. Jitender is actively involved in research across UX, usability, and human–computer interaction. His work examines user behaviour, interaction patterns, and the processes through which designers interpret and respond to user needs. He has conducted structured literature reviews, developed analytical models for design evaluation, and contributed to academic discussions on strengthening research-practice integration in design.
His work has been presented at international forums, including the Asian Conference on Ergonomics and Design (ACED), and published by Springer. He continues to explore emerging themes in UX evaluation, inclusive design, and user research methodologies, with an emphasis on developing tools and approaches that support evidence-informed design practice.
