BA LL.B (Hons.)/ BBA LL.B (Hons.) Sports Law

The Sports Law programs—BA LLB (Sports Law), BBA LLB (Sports Law) and LLB (Sports Law)—offer a specialised, practice-oriented understanding of the legal, regulatory and commercial ecosystem of sport in India and globally. The curriculum spans sports governance, athlete contracts and employment law, intellectual property and broadcasting rights, anti-doping regulation, sports integrity, and dispute resolution, with focused exposure to arbitration systems including the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

With India’s rapidly expanding sports economy across cricket, football, kabaddi, badminton, esports and multi-sport events, the program builds industry-ready competencies in governance and compliance, sponsorship and commercial agreements, broadcasting and OTT regulation, athlete representation, venue and event management, and integrity mechanisms—preparing graduates for roles with federations, clubs, leagues, agencies, media platforms, regulators and law firms.

Sports law is being reshaped by the fast commercialisation and professionalisation of sport, alongside sharper regulatory oversight. Key growth areas include athlete welfare and labour protections, stronger governance and integrity controls, and increased scrutiny of leagues and federations through competition and antitrust lenses. Technology is also changing the legal landscape—AI, performance data and digital platforms are intensifying needs around IP, privacy and data protection, while esports, online gaming and sports betting are driving new rules for integrity, consumer safeguards and contractual accountability.

Graduates commonly progress into law firms and litigation chambers handling sports contracts, regulatory and dispute matters, as well as in-house legal/compliance roles with leagues, clubs, federations and sports management organisations. Opportunities also extend to sports governing bodies and regulators (governance, policy, disciplinary oversight), media/broadcasting and sports marketing firms (rights, sponsorships, brand contracts), and emerging domains such as sports-tech and esports. Research centres, consultancies, arbitration institutions and think tanks also offer roles in dispute resolution, policy research and sports law reform.

Interested students must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for Sports Law as stated below: Minimum 50% Marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level (X and XII).

The process of selection criteria for students interested in pursuing Sports Law offered by UPES is based on the individual's performance in ULSAT / CLAT / Board Marks / CUET.
