Profile Summary
Prof. Sugata Marjit is one of India’s most distinguished economists and academic leaders, known globally for his contributions to international economics, development economics, and public policy. He completed his undergraduate studies at Presidency College and topped Calcutta University before earning his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester under the supervision of Ronald Jones. He has served as the first Distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and held key leadership positions including Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, Director of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC), and Chairman of the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education.
Prof. Marjit has taught and delivered lectures at nearly 50 prestigious universities and institutions worldwide, including Columbia University, Cornell University, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Tokyo, and Queen Mary University of London. He has published around 300 research papers in leading journals and authored books with globally renowned academic publishers. Alongside academics, he is also an accomplished Hindustani Classical Vocalist with performances across India and internationally.
Work Experience
Prof. Sugata Marjit has held faculty and leadership positions at Presidency College, Jadavpur University, Monash University, Indian Statistical Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. He served as Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, Director of CSSSC, and Chairman of the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education. He has also been associated as a Visiting Scholar with institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Awards and Grants
Prof. Sugata Marjit is the only economist to receive the Panchanan Chakrabarty Memorial Award, Mahalanobis Gold Medal, VKRV Rao National Prize, and the A. L. Nagar Fellowship and Gold Medal. He has also been invited as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow by Queen Mary University of London and the University of Dresden. Additionally, he received the State Drama Academy Award for Musical Direction in 1995.

Prof. Sugata Marjit has published nearly 300 research papers in internationally acclaimed journals such as the American Economic Review, European Economic Review, Journal of Development Economics, Economic Theory, Nature Climate Change, and Macroeconomic Dynamics. He has delivered invited lectures and held visiting professorships at around 50 global universities, including Columbia University, Cornell University, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Tokyo, the University of Birmingham, and the Australian National University. He has also contributed as a Visiting Scholar to major international organizations including the IMF, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and WIDER.
Beyond academics, Prof. Marjit is an accomplished Hindustani Classical Vocalist who has performed at prestigious venues and cultural festivals worldwide, reflecting his interdisciplinary engagement with both scholarship and the arts.
