UPES Aerospace CanSat Team ranks #1 in international Ranking in final round of Cansat Competition in Texas, USA
Team HAWKS 2.0 comprising of ten B.Tech. Automotive Design Engineering & Mechanical 3rd year students represented our college at event Efficycle 2015 organised by SAENIS in partnership with MARUTI SUZUKI INDIA LIMITED & ICAT at Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar. The team secured an ALL INDIA RANK 4 out of 196 teams which participated from all over the country. They also secured first prize in the LIGHT WEIGHT CATEGORY and also the first prize in BEST INNOVATION category.
RISE 2016 University of Petroleum & Energy Studies held 26th November 2016 The event was an initiative of UPES to boost the morale of students towards research field. Research funds have been provided by the University and best projects were awarded after the competition. The event is aimed to bring out the innovative and creative potential of young automobile enthusiasts. Undergraduate students from different technical streams can participate in the event. The basic outline of event consists of designing and fabricating a go-kart and then competing with those go-karts in the final race. Organizing committee of NKRC is VIRTUALIS MOTORSPORTS. The Finals were held at RPM Circuit Indore, Team XLR8 from UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM AND ENERGY STUDIES won the "AUTOCROSS" Award which is provided to the vehicle which has the best maneuverability and secured all India 10th position.
The Indo Asian Solar Challenge (INDO-ASC), hosted by the Ashman Motors and Technology, seeks to promote and celebrate educational excellence and engineering creativity. Team IL10S from UNIVERSITY OF PETROLEUM AND ENERGY STUDIES Participated in this competition held in Lovely Professional University and secured 1st Position in light weight round.
Hybrid Vehicle Challenge 2017, this event organised by ISEI, In 2017 it was held in Budhha International Circuit, Greater Noida, students of University of petroleum and energy studies participated in this event and secured AIR 6th and they also got 1st position for light weight vehicle round.
One of the B.Tech Electronics Engineering student, Mr. Amitabh Yadav, got selected as summer student in one of the most prestigious organisations in Europe CERN((European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland). Amitabh was amongst 150 out of a nearly 2000 candidates who had applied this year for a position as Summer Student (Member States) from all over the world.
BAJA 2017 (under SAEINDIA) was biggest achievement for UPESites. A Team of B.Tech Automotive Design Engineering students from UPES -Dirt Marshall 2.0- secured 1st rank in "Sledge Pull" and won Rs. 1 lakh as a cash prize Team was ranked 13th out of 413 teams registered initially with BAJA 2017. Team was led by captain Gomish Chawla.
Winning awards and proving worth of highly specialized education is more than just a priority for UPES students, it is their raison d'être.
A team of highly talent UPES Students - Team Phoenix 2.0 - won Second Prize of cash Rs. 50000 and Trophy in the first ever Autonomous Drone Design & Flying Competition at Punjab Engineering College, (PEC) Chandigarh on 25th ,26th of Feb 2017. All the team members (Mr. Nikhil Raj, Ms. Niharika, and Ms. Shraavya) are from B. Tech Aerospace Engineering with specialization in Avionics.
This inter-disciplinary program combines concepts and techniques like aeronautics, electronics and instrumentation. It endeavors to train and develop professionals in the fields of aerospace and avionics.
Phoenix outperformed all the other teams from various colleges like Delhi Technical University, Amity University, IITK, Gurukul College of Engineering and gave tough competition to the host teams of PEC. The Event was sponsored by Aeronautical society of India (Chandigarh branch) and Aeronautical Research and Development Board (ARDB). These Students were appreciated by the entire delegation which includes Dr. Satish Kumar, Padma Shri & Director NIT Kurukhshetra, Dr. R.S. Pant, Professor, AED, IIT Bombay and Air Marshal Sukhchain singh. Mr. A.J. Arun Jeya Prakash, UPES faculty – Dept. of Aerospace has been instrumental for this success of students.
A team of of M.Tech Robotics Engineering students won multiple prizes in the Robotics competition held in IIT, Roorkee. The team M.Tech comprised 1. BHUPESH PANDEY2. BARRE ALEX EPENETUS3. VIKAS THAPA who won first prize in the event named - POSEIDON(WATER BOT EVENT). The same team also won 3rd prize in the event named- CYBROG BREAK-IN .Around 60-80 institutes from all over India registered for this Event. Some of these institutes are :(IIT roorkee , IIIT Allahabaad, NIT hamirpur , NIT trichy, Manipal University ,ENIGMA institute bangalore ,COER Roorkee, QUANTUM Roorkee, KNIT, , SBIT Haryana, GB pant University, Sahyadri institute karnataka Etc.)
Rishabh Jain, a student of B. Tech. Automotive Design Engineering is awarded Student Fellow at FISITA 2016 World Automotive Congress held on 19th – 23rd September in South Korea.
Rishabh is now among 12 outstanding young student engineers selected across 37 countries.
The fellowship included long week technical and cultural tour to Korean Automotive Industry. This trip was jointly sponsored by the SAE INDIA and KSAE SAE INDIA (Society of Automotive Engineers India) and KSAE (Korean Society of Automotive Engineers ) & FISITA. 12
FISITA is the international federation that brings together the global automotive mobility sector to share ideas and advance automotive technological development. FISITA World Automotive Congress is one of the major events organized by FISITA. It is a biennial congress aims at facilitating the dialogue between engineers and industry, governments, academia, and environmental and standards organization, across all the areas of automotive technology.
3 students from Computer Science & Engineering qualified the regional rounds (North) and reached the National round at the Adobe Certified Associate Championship and Autodesk Certified User World Championship.
This included Archit Sareen, student from Mainframe Technology who participated in Photoshop CS5. Avi Sharma, of Cyber Security and Forensics, took part in design contest; and Naman Jain from Graphics and Gaming specialization, participated in Photoshop CS6.
The Championship was conducted in School of Design Studies, UPES in partnership with Certiport (Veloces Consultancy Pvt Ltd.).
B. Tech Mining Engineering student Kumar Sanu Rao’s selection for prestigious Mitacs Scholarship 2017 is indeed a news to rejoice for Department of Petroleum & Earth Sciences.

2017 Globallink Research Intern award is provided to engage a student in a research project at one of Canada’ leading research universities.
Two students of SoDS (Akash Raja and Aditya Sharma) were selected among the finalists in the TATA Sons Makerthon Wearable Challenge 2016.
Their project was a stylish ‘Febris’, which was designed to monitor various parameters of the body.
The 8 teams selected as finalists included participants from reputed organisations like selected IITG, NID and NIT. Although the team could not win the prize, got internship offers at TATA.
Febris is designed to take care of the user quietly in the background by monitoring various parameters of the body. The product enable users to wear it on the neck or forearm depending on the priority of parameters and type of activities they perform.
Team Astral grabbed first position in Europe and Asia and fourth position globally at CanSat Competition 2016. Team Astral comprises of students from Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Design Studies . 73 teams from across the world participated in the competition this year, held at Burkett, Texas, USA. UPES team Tesseract emerges winner of the Lockheed Martin Roll-On-Roll-Off competition launched in 2014. At a glittering award ceremony of C130J Super Hercules Aircraft Roll on/ Roll Off Universtiy Design Challenge, held on 8th March 2016 at India Habitat Center in New Delhi, the UPES team was awarded a grant of $40,000 to develop prototype of the module. Now, Lockheed Martin will work with UPES team to explore options with government and industry to explore mature prototype for the global markets. This team will develop prototypes of their modules and a go-to-market strategy with Tata Advance System Limited– Hyderabad.
The five teams from the prestigious Universities across India who were shortlisted for phase two were tasked to present their High Level Design (i.e. Roll On / Roll Off System) for the C-130 J Super Hercules Payload. Followed with this were the presentations, to evaluate them on the Technical Readiness Level (TRL) along with the market feasibility. “The teams were evaluated based on their Technical / Conceptual Design, Value to the Mission and Cost / Benefit, and now our team has successfully prototype phase of this challenge,” said Dr. Sudhir Joshi, faculty UPES and Principal-Investigator- Roll-on/Roll-off (RO/RO). The other team who wins this award as co-winner was IIT Madras. Among notable teams who could not make for this phototype phase was IIT Delhi and BITS Goa.
Launched in November 2014, the Lockheed Martin C-130J Roll-On/Roll-Off University Design Challenge provided research grants for each university team to work with local industry partners and mentors from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The objective of the challenge was to develop design specifications for proposed modules that could be used on a Lockheed MartinC-130J Super Hercules cargo aircraft. It is believed that the proposed capabilities presented by winning teams (including UPES team) in this competition are expected to increase efficiency and effectiveness of future disaster relief operations supported by C-130J aircraft.
Since 2007, Lockheed Martin has been successfully running the India Innovation Growth Program in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology, Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Stanford Graduate School of Business and the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas.
Rosy and Shubham, students of UPES B. Tech. Computer Science and Engineering course win the title prize of "Best Android App" and a cash prize of $400 for the project "Intellivision” at the SpartaHack 2016, an official annual hackathon of Michigan State University, USA.
There were 114 projects presented at the end of 36-hour hackathon. This team was comprised of 4 members including them and two more students from DePauw University and University of Illinois from USA. This team submitted their project and won the award for the title prize. The project Intellivision is a live augmented reality image tagging android application using Google Glass and MYO band.
The UPES ACM Student Chapter won the 2015-2016 Student Chapter Excellence Award for Outstanding Recruitment Program worldwide, with prize money of $500. This Chapter has represented UPES internationally and recognized as winners from almost 1000+ ACM student chapters across the world.
Once again, UPES- Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) Student Chapter, Youngest Chapter in the region won the “Outstanding Chapter Award -2015” at Houston, Texas, USA. On behalf of the Chapter, Aamir Aamir Lokhandwala, the student and president of the UPES SPE Chapter (2014) received the trophy at the Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition [ATCE 15] on 28th - 30th September 2015. The award was presented by Mr. Nathan Meehan, President of SPE International. The ‘Outstanding Award’ is the highest honor for any Student Chapter, given by SPE International. UPES Chapter is the youngest Chapter in the region to have won the Outstanding Chapter Award twice in a row.
Before this, the Chapter has already achieved the rare distinction by being awarded the Gold Standard Award for three successive years (2011, 2012 & 2013). The Gold Standard is an exceptional standard for performance in categories of membership, planning, education, professionalism, service, support, and fundraising. The SPE Student Chapter of UPES is one of the internationally acclaimed SPE Chapters around the globe.

A wonderful star observation night was observed by the students of B Tech. Aerospace Engineering and Avionics Engineering and M Tech. Computational Fluid Dynamics students to see the Moons of Jupiter and the craters of the Earth’s Moon at the . Under the supervision of Dr Guven, Prof., UPES and Mr. Kapoor from Rose City Astronomer’s Club, these students were able to observe distant stars such as Polaris (The North Star) with the help of the telescope owned by UPES for the purpose (12’ Dobsonian Telescope).
A team of two students Krishna Chaturvedi and Priya Sihag from B Tech Applied Petroleum Engineering Upstream, UPES has made the country proud with their innovative idea Fire in Ice: Fuel for the Future. This team participated in the final competition at prestigious Global Shell Ideas 360 at Amsterdam. The Fire in Ice: Fuel for the Future project implemented under the mentorship of Andrew Tan presents an innovative, promising and sustainable source of energy for the future via the injection of carbon-dioxide in hydrate reservoirs to produce methane gas. The microbial action on Carbon dioxide in reservoir to convert it to methane via methanogenesis (procedure of microbial action) and reformation of a methane gas hydrate, forming a complete cycle and providing an ever-lasting source of energy was the concept of the idea.
Doing the Masters’ thesis is a huge accomplishment and further getting it accepted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a great honor. This is what Amit Panwar, who have been UPES B.Tech ADE student (2005 – 09 Batch), accomplished pursuing Masters’ of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from University of Alberta, USA.
Amit’s research shows how using temperature data and production data together improve overall recovery from a stream – assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) reservoirs. Besides being accepted by ASME his research has been nominated for an “Award Quality” entry for outstanding contribution in engineering.
UPES and Laureate International Universities brought together students, members of the Indian government, prominent business and academic leaders, to engage in a discourse with former US secretary of state Dr. Condoleezza Rice, on issues of economic prosperity, foreign policy, global trends in education and the importance of quality higher education. The address took place at The Claridges Hotel in New Delhi. Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Honourable Minister of State for Human Resource Development graced the event.

Two of Aerospace / Avionics students will be going for a 3 month internship for a formal program of European Space Agency in Estonia. They had attended International Astronautical Congress 2013 in China. It is an international congress which has been going on for 65 years and all heads of major space agencies (NASA, ESA, ISRO, Russian Space Agency etc) along with all major space companies in the world (Virgin Galactic, SPaceX, Google Lunar Prize, Pratt & Whitney, Boeing) come together to exchange research and information. The work of our students on Cold Gas Propulsion for Nanosatellites was appreciated by the space community at large and they were invited for further research. As part of this program, they will be working at Tartu Observatory in tie with Estonian Space Agency in relation to a project by European Space Agency. The project will be on propulsion system of nano and micro satellites. They will also be paid for their 3 month internship period.
Harsimran Taggar – a student of B tech Computer Science Engineering with specialization in Mainframe Technology 2011-15 Batch, UPES got an opportunity to attend the Global Community Development Program at Kiev, Ukraine for 1 month under the Summer Camp project organized by AIESEC in Kiev, Ukraine. During the project, Harsimran worked with children of different age groups from different countries and participated in organizing lessons and games, showing variety of world culture. The aim of the project was to share and exchange culture, social issues including ecological problems, to help children identify their goals and values. Interactive games, ice-breakers, dance, songs for children was also the part of the project besides attending conference, creating reports and articles.
4 students of B. Tech Automotive Design Engineering won the Satellite Round (1st round) of Mahindra Auto Quotient Quiz held at UPES Campus on 12th Nov., 2013. The event was indeed a great success with over 130 teams participating, including 12 teams from other colleges like DIT, Graphic Era, etc.This team, Akash Mittal & Bharat Batra of B. Tech ADE Final Year and Udit Sharma & Raman Nain of B. Tech ADE 2nd Year, has also represented Uttarakhand region in the City Round at Delhi.
A UPES B.Tech students' team comprising Rishabh Gupta from Geo Informatics, Jivesh Dubey and Mayur Varshney from Applied Petroleum Engineering won the First Runners-up award in OCEAN 2013 competition which is organized annually by Schlumberger for teams of students from colleges in countries from the Indian subcontinent. The UPES team won for developing a p l u g - i n f o r Pe t re l c a l l e d 'PRESCIENT' for use in bore-hole cleaning. It was Rishabh Gupta who made the presentation on the final day. The team received the award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000 at a glittering function in New Delhi held at Hotel Shangri La on October 3, 2013 in the presence of senior industry representatives and representatives from Schlumberger India and from their offices overseas.
A team of four UPES students from B.Tech, 3rd year, APE-Up Stream has bagged the first prize for their poster on the theme 'Role of Leadership in Driving HSE Culture' which they presented at the first Global HSE Conference held in New Delhi on 26-27 September 2013. The team comprised of Bhaskar Chakraborty, Kapil Mohan Awasthi, Mayank Mishra and Nayanshree. The conference held for the first time in a South Asian country was organized by Cairn India in association with Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) of Government of India and the Indian Oil and Gas industry.
This year, Saina Kohli represented UPES at the World Business Forum by participating in the WOBI Leadership Program held at Mexico from 29th – 30th June, 2016. Saina is a student of BBA Financial Trading (2015 – 17) batch. She was selected across three colleges of the University as a qualified candidate for the event. WOBI Forum provides students a great opportunity to learn about management and leadership skills and what today's economy demands. Every year, UPES students participate in the World Business Forums to acquire such management skills.
