Program Details
The B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics / B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics by Research at UPES School of Advanced Engineering (Applied Sciences Cluster) is a four-year undergraduate programme aligned with NEP 2020, offering academic flexibility, multidisciplinary learning and outcome-based progression. The programme runs across eight semesters (up to 20 credits per semester) with multiple entry and exit options students may exit after 120 credits with an undergraduate degree, or complete 160 credits to earn either B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics or B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics by Research. The Research pathway includes research methodology, supervised research and a defended dissertation evaluated by an expert panel, and the four-year degree supports direct PhD entry (with coursework) in India and abroad, as per norms.
Pure Mathematics Focus: Designed for students drawn to abstraction, proof and theoretical depth, the Pure Mathematics specialisation builds the core structures underpinning advanced mathematics and allied disciplines. It emphasises axiomatic, proof-based learning and develops logical reasoning, rigour and mathematical maturity, preparing students strongly for higher study and research-led careers.
Program Highlights
- The B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics - Pure Mathematics (3+1)* program follows an NEP 2020-aligned four-year structure, with multiple entry and exit options and lateral entry subject to applicable academic regulations.
- Advanced coursework and research-oriented pathways provide opportunities for specialised study, supervised research and dissertation assessment, where applicable.
- The Pure Mathematics specialisation emphasises proof, abstraction, mathematical structures and rigorous logical reasoning.
- Theoretical study and research-based learning develop skills relevant to postgraduate education, doctoral research and academic careers, subject to further qualifications and admission requirements.
Industry Trends & Career Opportunities
The B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics - Pure Mathematics (3+1)* program develops logical reasoning, abstraction and analytical skills relevant to advanced study and research. Pure mathematical concepts underpin areas such as cryptography, algorithms, information theory and theoretical computing, alongside applications across physics and data science. Careers in these fields may require additional technical training or postgraduate qualifications.
Potential career and further-study pathways include:
- Research Assistant, subject to project and employer requirements
- Mathematics Content Developer
- Postgraduate study in mathematics and related disciplines
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), subject to the required qualifications and selection process
- Doctoral research, subject to institutional eligibility and admission requirements
- Academic teaching and postdoctoral research after completing the required advanced qualifications
- Civil services and other competitive examinations, subject to the applicable eligibility criteria
Placements
Students typically progress into research and academia-oriented roles, higher studies (including PhD tracks), and knowledge-led careers that value proof-based reasoning and advanced theoretical capability, alongside competitive examinations and content/academic support roles.
