About the department


The Department of Petroleum Engineering and Earth Sciences aims to offer innovative teaching and research facilities to the students to assist them to create and apply innovative technologies in Drilling Engineering, Production Engineering, Reservoir Engineering and Applied Geology with special interest to Engineering Geology and Petroleum Geology and as well as efficiently develop their knowledge and skills to find solutions of any problems related to oil and gas industry.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering and Earth Sciences, established in 2003, the year of inception of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, is the pioneering centre of teaching, training and advanced research in petroleum engineering and earth sciences in India. The Department offers B.Tech in Applied Petroleum Engineering - Upstream, M.Tech in Petroleum Engineering, B.Sc. in Geology (Hons), M.Sc. in Petroleum Geosciences and Ph.D. programs. In addition, the department organizes many national and international level conferences/workshops/seminars and provides training programs and consultancy. The department has developed a very strong industry-institution relationship which is unique in the country. The department consists of a team of highly talented faculty members and technical staff who contribute to the development of the young minds.

The students obtain summer training with reputed oil/gas and mineral sector organizations. Students are recruited through all-India competitive examinations conducted by UPSC, ONGC, and other public sector organizations. In the current session and in the recent past, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Shell India Pvt. Ltd., Cairn Energy India Pvt. Ltd., and Essar Oil Ltd. have been the foremost recruiters through campus interviews.

The department has a high computation laboratory equipped with petroleum engineering software, such as PETREL, ECLIPSE, PIPESIM, OFM, LANDMARK, CMG, and FRACMAN. The department also hosts an excellent rigzone and a geological museum exhibiting rocks, minerals, fossils, and meteorites.

The department has students chapters, such as UPES student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs)

  • Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems, reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling of complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
