What is the PM Scholarship Scheme?
The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is a government initiative aimed at providing financial aid to the wards and widows of deceased or serving personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles, to help them pursue technical and professional education, including degrees such as B.Tech. (desw.gov.in)
It is managed by the Department of Ex‑Servicemen Welfare under the Ministry of Defence and is funded through the National Defence Fund.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scheme for B.Tech courses, applicants typically need to satisfy the following conditions:
- Be a ward or widow/widower of CAPF or Assam Rifles personnel (or in some cases, personnel from certain State/UT police forces)
- Be enrolled in a first professional degree course like B.Tech / B.E. in an institution recognised by the relevant regulatory body (e.g. AICTE)
- Fulfil minimum academic score requirements: normally, a specified percentage in the relevant qualifying exam (e.g. Class XII or diploma)
- Meet any additional priority criteria, such as being a dependent of personnel killed or disabled in action, or awarded gallantry honours.
Scholarship Amount
- From the financial year 2019‑20 onwards, the monthly scholarship disbursement has been ₹2,500 for boys and ₹3,000 for girls.
- The funds are typically transferred via Electronic Clearing Service (ECS) into the beneficiary’s bank account.
Application Process
- Applications are submitted online. Earlier, applicants needed to apply via the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) website, but the scheme has been progressively migrated to the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
- Applicants must complete one-time registration on NSP, fill in the required details, upload supporting documents, and track renewal procedures annually for continuing benefits.
Important Notes
- There is a fixed quota of scholarships each year (typically around 5,500 students in total, split between boys and girls).
- The scheme gives preference to certain priority categories — for example, wards of personnel killed or disabled in the line of duty, or those awarded gallantry medals.
- Only students studying in recognised and approved institutions are eligible.
Scholarships for B.Tech Students – General Category
While a large number of schemes are targeted at reserved categories or economically weaker sections, certain scholarships are open to all students irrespective of caste or category. These include merit-based scholarships like the KVPY Fellowship, the Digital India Internship Scheme, and various private-sector scholarships such as the G.P. Birla Scholarship, Concord Biotech Limited Scholarship, and IOCL Scholarship. These schemes focus primarily on academic performance, innovation, or research potential, thereby benefiting general category students as well.
Scholarships for B.Tech Lateral Entry Students
Students who enter B.Tech programmes through lateral entry after completing a diploma are also eligible for specific financial support. Various state-level post-matric scholarships accept applications from diploma holders transitioning into undergraduate engineering programmes, provided they meet academic and income criteria. Additionally, some universities and private foundations offer institutional scholarships tailored for lateral entry students to ensure equal opportunities in continuing education.
Ratan Tata Scholarship for Engineering Students
One of the most prestigious philanthropic initiatives is the Ratan Tata Scholarship for Engineering Students, primarily aimed at supporting Indian students admitted to international universities, particularly Cornell University (USA). The scholarship covers the entire tuition fee for undergraduate engineering programmes and is awarded on the basis of both academic excellence and demonstrated financial need. With funding that can extend up to several lakhs of rupees annually, this scholarship has enabled many deserving Indian students to pursue world-class education abroad.
