The Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellowship, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious international research fellowships, is awarded solely on the basis of academic excellence. The selection process is highly competitive, evaluating a scholar’s research achievements, originality, and quality of the proposed project, future contributions to science, and the strength of the collaboration with the German host institution. Notably, more than fifty Nobel Prize laureates have acknowledged this fellowship as instrumental in shaping their global scientific careers, underlining its significance on the world stage.

As part of this program, Dr. Bhavana Gupta will undertake advanced research at the Institute for Molecular Systems Engineering and Advanced Materials, Ruprecht Karls University (Heidelberg University), Germany—one of the world’s oldest and most respected institutions. The fellowship supports multiple research visits between 2026 and 2028, enabling sustained international collaboration, academic enrichment, and innovation in high-impact areas of chemistry and materials science.

Her research centres on the discovery and development of optimised functional materials that can deliver electrochemical performance approaching theoretical limits. The objective is not only to create materials with superior energy conversion and storage capabilities but also to ensure their long-term stability, scalability, and real-world applicability. At Heidelberg, Dr. Gupta aims to integrate high-throughput analytical techniques with novel materials synthesis, taking full advantage of the university’s state-of-the-art infrastructure. This data-driven approach enables simultaneous evaluation of material properties—such as charge-transfer kinetics, conductivity, and structural stability—thereby accelerating the pathway from lab-scale discovery to practical implementation.

The broader impact of her work lies in contributing to the design of next-generation electrochemical systems, including high-efficiency batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and electrocatalytic devices. Her research also addresses key priorities like sustainability and environmental responsibility, ensuring that the materials developed are not only high-performing but also viable for widespread use in clean energy technologies and renewable storage solutions.
